Job DescriptionSavannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) is seeking a postdoctoral associate for a Laboratory Director's Postdoctoral Fellow position focused on real time observation of ion exchange resin and microfluidic design through spectroscopy. This postdoctoral appointment will emphasize the development and application of actinide separation chemistry to support SRNL's mission in national security (NNSA), environmental management (EM), and energy security. Specific work will involve utilizing a microfluidic flow cell to investigate ion exchange resin behavior in separation science. The work contains developing and scaling up related to traditional the ion exchange techniques.
SRNL is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join the Nuclear Detection and Actinide Separations group beginning summer 2025. All SRNL postdoctoral research associate positions are fixed term assignments within the company and benefits eligible.
The ideal candidate will be a self-starting and inquisitive researcher, eager to promote a collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment at the forefront of actinide separations technology. The researcher will collaborate with scientists and engineers across all three SRNL directorates, including material scientists, mechanical engineers, and experts in theoretical modeling and simulation.
Responsibilities- Supporting SRNL's ongoing research and development activities in actinide separations utilizing microfluidic and ion exchange techniques. Integration of spectroscopic analysis is a key component which involves both in-situ and offline analytical measurements to inform process parameters and quality control.
- Learn to utilize knowledge of spectroscopy and microfluidic technology to contextualize results to understand actinide separation. Ability to tackle the challenges of scale up.
- Learn to design and build custom components for microfluidic and spectroscopic experiments, particularly for applications involving ion exchange resins.
- Leading publication efforts based on research findings and contributing to the broader scientific community.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications: - PhD + 0-1 yrs with > 2 first author peer reviewed papers
- Individuals must have completed all requirements for their PhD by the start of employment.
- For ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, US Citizenship is Legally Required
Preferred Qualifications: - Candidate should possess a background and working knowledge of chemical separation techniques as well as the fundamental concepts and behavior of actinide materials. They should exercise judgment with practical engineering or scientific principles to determine an appropriate action.
- Preferred degrees include Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry.
- Cross-discipline knowledge in separation science, design of microfluidics, and hydraulic fluid experience is preferred.
- A basic knowledge of actinide chemistry and characterization tools including UV-Vis and Raman.
