Job Opening:
The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks applicants for the position of Seasonal Aquatic Biologist I.
Under the direction of the Environmental Quality Group supervisor or designees, the successful applicants will:
-Participate in field surveys of Quabbin Reservoir by using water quality probes, obtaining water quality and phytoplankton samples, delivering samples to the analytical laboratory, and processing biological samples.
- Participate in laboratory analysis including phytoplankton/zooplankton counts and processing water samples for chlorophyll extractions.
- Participate in invasive aquatic plant management activities by scouting for new invasive plants, counting invasive plant fragments, mapping invasive plant beds, and recording plant species occurrence in the Quabbin Reservoir and watershed ponds.
- Participate in water quality surveys of ponds within the Quabbin and Ware River Watersheds by using water quality probes and collecting water samples for cyanobacteria analysis.
- Participate in zooplankton surveys by using vertical and oblique tows, and sediment grab samplers.
-Assist in compiling and entering environmental monitoring data into electronic databases using applications including R/R-Studio, Excel, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Online.
-Assist with data analysis preparatory to writing reports on monitoring studies.
-Perform other related duties as required.
While not required, small boat operation and canoe paddling experience is advantageous as is the identification of freshwater aquatic macrophytes.
