Additional CommentsDo you have a passion for forestry? Would you like to be part of an organization whose mission is to protect, promote, and enhance South Carolina's forests for the benefit of all? If so, the South Carolina Forestry Commission's (SCFC) Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program has a great job opportunity for you!We are looking for highly motivated individuals who have an interest in collecting forest resource data on a network of plots located in the Upstate of the State of South Carolina. FIA Foresters are critically important in collecting forest resource data that are used to evaluate the status of the forests of South Carolina.
FIA is the nation's continuous "forest census." The data collected reports on the quantity and condition of our forests. FIA field data are used to analyze and report how much forest exists, where it is located, who owns it, and how it is changing over time. FIA also reports on how well trees are growing, how many have died or been removed, the impact of insects and diseases, and how many acres of forests we are gaining or losing over time. The program projects what forests are likely to look like in 10 to 50 years from now. FIA is the fundamental building block for forest resource managers to assess South Carolina's and America's forests to ensure they are sustainable and available for future generations to enjoy.
The SCFC's FIA program develops its foresters with knowledge and skill sets that will carry an individual throughout their career. Through training and real-world experiences, FIA Foresters gain expertise in forest management and silvicultural practices, forest insects and diseases, and tree and invasive plant species identification. In addition, FIA Foresters gain and possess knowledge pertaining to wood utilization, the forest industry, and the potential for trees to become growing stock for commercial use.
