Job purpose:The position is responsible for the daily environmental advisory and compliance activities at SSAB Americas' steel manufacturing operation. This position supports other SSAB North American facilities, as assigned, including one or more satellite facilities. Specifically, this position is accountable for advising, monitoring, auditing, and reporting on compliance with environmental regulations and permit requirements along with conformance to the SSAB Americas' Environmental Management Systems ("EMS").
Duties and responsibilities:- Manage all required documentation required by environmental permits, regulatory standards and SSAB Americas' specific programs, (i.e. daily air emission records, waste manifests, weekly water testing documents, etc.).
- Responsible for the preparation and timely submission of all required environmental reports with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.
- Act as the main point of contact for Environmental Regulatory inspections.
- Manage and verify the status of the Safety Data Sheets ("SDS") system for all products used by operations, including satellite operations.
- Responsible for compliance with required chemical inventory reporting and spill response and associated internal and external reporting.
- Responsible for the tracking of environmental permits to ensure timely permit renewal.
- Responsible for the submission of new and/or modified permit applications.
- Responsible for updating required written environmental programs and providing required environmental training to operations personnel. Also, conduct environmental training at other SSAB facilities as directed.
- Provide support, through routine contacts with operations and engineering personnel, with topics relating to environmental requirements, permitting and compliance.
- Provide support and guidance to the SSAB Safety and Environmental Committee(s), if applicable.
- Provide environmental compliance support to other SSAB Americas facilities as assigned and perform routine audits of those facilities to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Act as the SSAB Americas representative with external local/state business and professional environmental organizations.
- Responsible for encouraging and evaluating continuous improvement opportunities via innovations, new technology, learned efficiency practices, etc.
- Responsible for proper and prompt communication of any significant events (i.e. site audits, new permits, permit modifications or renewals, permit exceedances, spills, site inspections involving state and/or federal agencies, special projects, external complaints, etc.) to the Corporate Environmental Director and local management.
- Provide support and guidance for external customer requests, surveys and other customer requested environmental information.
- Responsible for providing information for internal reports and data requests from operations and/or corporate groups.
- Responsible for the implementation and management of the EMS for each assigned facility.
- Regular and reliable attendance.
Qualifications: Education and Experience:Required Education:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Sciences, Natural Sciences, or Environmental Engineering or similar degree within the environmental field, or
- A Bachelor of Science or equivalent degree and a minimum of seven (7) years of experience managing a comprehensive environmental compliance program, or
- A Bachelor of Arts degree in a related field and a minimum of ten (10) years of experience managing a comprehensive environmental compliance program.
Preferred Experience:
- Prior experience in heavy manufacturing.
- Experience working with an ISO 14001 program.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and Microsoft Sharepoint.
- Good working knowledge of regulatory requirements, including Canadian and European requirements.
Working conditions:The employee will frequently be required to:

- Use both hands for grasping, handling, gripping, and feeling textures and temperatures.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:This position reports directly to the Environmental Director, SSAB Americas. The incumbent supports the operating facility and has an indirect reporting relationship with the Plant Operations Manager. Reporting to the Environmental Manager are:
- One (1) Environmental Coordinator
- One (1) Environmental Specialist
Position Type - Work Hours - Travel Requirements:- Position is full time, exempt
- Position works an eight (8) hour day shift, Monday through Friday - additional overtime as needed
