Shannon and Wilson is seeking a highly motivated, self-driven mid-level Wetland Ecologist and Permit Specialist to join our Natural Resources group based in our Seattle headquarters. Candidates should demonstrate an understanding of wetland, stream, wildlife, and/or restoration ecology as well as environmental permitting and compliance. Candidate should possess a strong technical education, professional demeanor, and experience managing tasks and/or projects.
Responsibilities - Conducting wetland delineations, ordinary high water mark delineations, high tide line determinations, and other similar field investigations.
- Authoring technical documents, such as wetland and stream delineation reports, critical areas reports, wetland and stream mitigation plans, and mitigation banking plans.
- Evaluating impacts to federally protected threatened or endangered species and preparing biological assessments for Endangered Species Act consultations.
- Preparing permit applications for local, state, and federal agencies, such as Sections 404 and 401 of the Clean Water Act, Hydraulic Project Approvals (HPAs), Shoreline Master Program applications, SEPA Checklists, and NEPA documentation.
- Engaging clearly and professionally with clients, vendors, government agencies, and staff at all levels.
- Managing projects or tasks, including developing scopes of service and fee estimates and tracking scope and budget throughout project implementation.
- Attending client and company-sponsored meetings, events, and training.
Requirements
The ideal candidate will demonstrate some, but perhaps not all of the following experience and technical capabilities:
- 3-6 years of direct experience in areas noted above and solid background in wetlands, wildlife, fisheries, restoration, and/or arborist services.
- Must be personable, flexible, professional and willing to work in a team environment and collaborating across disciplines.
- However, the ability to also work independently, with appropriate level of supervision, is also preferred.
- Understanding of the environmental permitting process and has the ability to work with regulatory agency personnel.
- Excellent writing, organizational, and communication skills required to effectively interact with clients, vendors, and staff at all levels.
- Wetland training, such as the University of Washington's Certificate in Wetland Science and Management or similar, preferred.
- Experience providing consulting work as a wetland ecologist (or similar) in the Pacific Northwest region preferred.
- Certification as a WSDOT Biological Assessment author preferred.
- CESCL certification and construction observation and compliance preferred.
- Must be willing and able to travel to projects regionally.
- Must be experienced using the Microsoft Office suite, include Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and Sharepoint.
- Experience using ESRI ArcGIS to create, import/export, and managing spatial data highly desirable.
- This position requires critical thinking and analysis; frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, and lifting and carrying 30+ pounds; working in all weather conditions; field visits per project needs; ability to travel to other S&W offices; and ability to drive (or fly) to and from job sites locally and out of state.
- Must have and maintain a driver license and have an insurable driving record.

Level PlacementTypically, depending on an applicant's education, experience, other qualifications they possess, if they are a fit for the company and local office culture, and the current business needs, a Mid-Level Wetland Ecologist/Permitting Specialist typically would be placed at a Shannon & Wilson Professional III or IV level.
- Professional III range: $80,000.00 - $95,000.00
- Professional IV range: $90,000.00 - $105,000.00
