General PurposePerforms primarily manual and occasional clerical work necessary for the maintenance and improvement of gardens and landscapes.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.
- Performs landscaping and horticultural duties including but not limited to cultivating planted beds, turf areas, digging, planting, fertilizing, trimming and pruning shrubs, trees, flowers, and temporary floral displays, preparing soil for planting, applying pesticides and fungicides.
- Carries out seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, soil conditioning, watering, mulching, and pest and weed control as necessary and when directed.
- Maintains garden nursery.
- Performs basic maintenance on gardening power and hand tools.
- Performs irrigation system monitoring, set up, and basic repairs.
- Opens and closes, locks and unlocks facilities as needed and as directed.
- Works with and facilitates the activities of volunteers, contractual labor, and other Village departments.
- Researches horticultural topics pertinent to job functions.
- Assists the Horticulturist in landscape and garden design.
- Assists the Horticulturist in maintaining plant records, inventory, location mapping, signage placement, and other collection tasks. Uses plant collection database.
- Interacts with and informs the public on pertinent horticultural topics and garden information.
- Teaches gardening classes and leads tours.
- Assists in setting up and taking down equipment for various functions and programs.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum QualificationsEducation and Experience:Bachelor's degree in relevant field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Qualifications:- Must have general knowledge of South Florida plants, horticulture, and landscape design.
- Must have working knowledge of equipment, materials and supplies used in horticulture, gardening, and grounds maintenance, and be able to effect minor repairs.
- Must have field skill in the use of cutting and power tools.
- Must be physically able to perform duties, which may require walking, crawling, kneeling, or standing for prolonged periods of time.
- Must have good corrected eyesight, including depth perception and the ability to distinguish colors.
- Must maintain high ethical, honesty, and moral standards.
- Must be fluent in English. Ability to communicate in Spanish is desirable.
- Must be a non-smoker.
- Applicants must complete all requirements established by the Village of Pinecrest for employment. This may include, but not be limited to, a written examination, typing test, psychological screening to determine suitability for position, polygraph examination, comprehensive background investigation, and a job-related medical examination including a drug/alcohol screening test.
- The minimum qualifications may be waived by the Village Manager.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: - Ability to obtain and maintain a licensed driver status in the State of Florida.
- Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds, move up to 200 pounds of bulk loads, walk/stand for long periods of time and perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.
