The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Wildlife Biologist 3 located in Douglas!What you will be doing:This position serves as a wildlife research biologist for the Southeast Alaska region and is responsible for designing and implementing research projects as a principal investigator. The incumbent acts as a species specialist conducting research on large carnivore ecology, population dynamics, and habitat selection with an emphasis on brown bears and American black bears. The incumbent will work closely with research and management biologists to identify and prioritize research needs to answer questions that are important to sustainably managing wildlife populations.

The working conditions you can expect:This Wildlife Biologist 3 will be based in Douglas, Alaska - 3 miles from downtown Juneau. This is a dynamic position that will spend extended time in the field conducting research in alpine and forested habitats. Field work includes working in steep and rugged terrain, flying in small fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, immobilizing and handling large mammals, and collecting biological data necessary to manage the species. Typical of most research opportunities, the majority of days are spent at a computer managing large datasets, conducting analyses, and writing reports and manuscripts for publication. The Douglas office is shared by other divisions and is organized as an open office layout to promote collaboration and communication. The position may be suitable for partial telework after a probationary period depending on the needs of the incumbent and leadership team.
- Requires ability to collect data while flying in small aircraft.
- Requires frequent travel within Alaska (1-2 weeks per month, 4 months per year).
Who we are looking for:We are looking for an energetic and committed professional who has the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Demonstrated ability to design, plan, budget, and implement complex research programs which collect biological information to promote sound and practical wildlife management of large carnivore species.
- Demonstrated broad knowledge of wildlife biology. Skills should include a solid foundation in the concepts, principles, and theories of wildlife, including population dynamics, distribution, habitat requirements, life histories, reproduction, behavior and conservation. Proficiency in wildlife biology field data collection methods, statistical techniques, and software platforms.
- Demonstrated ability to clearly present biological data and analytical results to multiple audiences including scientific peers, the general public, and the Alaska Board of Game.
- Experience in collecting data while flying in small aircraft and proficiency in the capture, immobilization, radio-collaring, and handling of large carnivore species.
- Demonstrated written communication ability to publish wildlife research in peer-reviewed scientific publications.

Must be able to obtain and maintain:- Wildlife Chemical Immobilization Certification (Controlled Substance Act; US Code Title 21; CFR 1300).
- Wildlife Capture and Handling Certification (Animal Welfare Act; Title 7, chapter 54 section 2131-2157; CFR Title 9, chapter 1).
- CPR and First Aid training.
Minimum QualificationsA bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management;
AND
One year of full performance professional level biologist experience. The required professional biologist work experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 2, Wildlife Biologist 2, Habitat Biologist 2, or Fisheries Geneticist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
Substitution:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.
Special Note:"Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.
Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
