Description and FunctionsOpen Until 10/25/2024GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Wyoming Game and Fish Department seeks a Quantitative Wildlife Biologist. This position provides advanced analytical expertise to the Department and is part of the Department's Science, Research, and Analytical Support Unit. Specific duties include managing and analyzing the Department's extensive GPS datasets from both big-game and non-game species, administering several aspects of the Department's permitting process, and compiling data to support policy decisions. Applicants should have a strong analytical skillset and a keen interest in wildlife management. In addition, applicants should demonstrate a track record of effective interpersonal communication. The position will be at the Cheyenne Headquarters Office (preferred) or an approved regional office.

- GPS data management and workflow development. Work with Department staff and outside experts to develop, maintain, and oversee a data clearinghouse for all GPS data collected by the Department. Develop workflows to manage animal movement data for both big-game and non-game species. Assist Department personnel with data retrieval and interpretation.
- Advanced data analyses. Analyze wildlife movement data to support Department needs and inform management actions. Implement data-driven approaches to help managers make real-time decisions. Develop visuals, dashboards, peer-reviewed publications, and other deliverables to disseminate results. Work with Department staff, programs, and regions to trial GPS technology, thereby ensuring animals are monitored with high-quality, minimally invasive tools. Support region staff on all aspects of transmitter programming and design, including making sure that the data collected will yield defensible answers to management questions.
- Permitting. Issue permits for scientific research, education, and other categories as needed. Ensure that permittees comply with permit requirements, including proper archiving of data. Oversee the Department's permitting database and implement improvements as needed. Coordinate with the public, Department personnel, academic, federal, state, and municipal agencies on permit and science-related topics.
- Analytical capacity building. Work with Unit staff to coordinate and help deliver training opportunities that build internal analytical capacity. Assist with training new Wildlife Biologists and Wildlife Management Coordinators.
QualificationsPREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS: Preference may be given to applicants with a Master's Degree in Wildlife Ecology, Biology, or Management, or with at least 5 years of progressive work experience in wildlife management and quantitative applications.

KNOWLEDGE: - Advanced understanding of the principles, concepts, and practices of wildlife ecology and management.
- Advanced knowledge of traditional and emerging statistical applications relevant to wildlife ecology.
- Demonstrated expertise in spatial analysis, survival analyses, population models, and Bayesian statistics.
- Expertise in data collection associated with wildlife monitoring and research projects.
- Experience developing new mathematical approaches or tools to solve wildlife problems.
- Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences.
- Advanced technical writing skills.
- Advanced familiarity with Program R, Microsoft, and Google platforms and an ability to learn new software packages.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work with stakeholders, despite disagreements or differing perspectives.
- Capacity to solve problems both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to analyze information and make appropriate decisions.
- Capacity to make and defend recommendations despite imperfect data.
- Knowledge of state personnel rules and Wyoming Game & Fish Commission policies regarding Department employees.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Education:Bachelor's Degree (typically in Wildlife Management)
Experience:1-3 years progressive work experience (typically in Wildlife Management) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Senior Wildlife Biologist

Necessary Special RequirementsPHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:- The position requires lifting heavy objects and strenuous physical exertion at times.
- Must be able to work in various weather conditions and environments.
- Must be able to work all days of the week and varied work hours, including weekends and early mornings, evenings/late nights.
- Ability to safely operate motorized equipment, including 4x4 pickup trucks, ATVs, and snowmobiles.
- Ability to safely use horses and mules (where assigned) to perform surveys or transport equipment and other items.

- Location preference is Cheyenne, WY. However, alternate regional office locations will be considered.
- Successful applicants for employment must pass a background check before the appointment.
- May be asked to complete the Department's wildlife immobilization training and certification following hire.
- Travel will be required.
