Job DescriptionThe Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) Northeastern Region office is seeking an Assistant Aquatics Program Manager. This position presents exciting opportunities to channel your love of the outdoors and improve aquatic resources. As the assistant program manager, you will assist the regional program manager in the administration and implementation of sport fish programs, and direct management of two Blue Ribbon fisheries (Flaming Gorge Reservoir & Utah Green River). The position also supervises a full-time Wildlife Biologist II. Both positions assist in the management of several smaller north-slope reservoirs and the Diamond Mountain Lakes. Principal DutiesAs the Assistant Aquatics Program Manager you will:
- Conduct field surveys to monitor populations of fish and other aquatic species
- Analyze data and prepare reports; make management recommendations based on data gathered
- Effectively communicate biological information with other biologists and members of the public
- Project planning, funding, and implementation
- Supervise field biologists (one possibly two).
- Work with the Aquatics Program Manager to coordinate management activities and programs within DWR and with other governmental agencies.
The Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate has:
- A Master's degree or be enrolled in a Master's degree program in Fisheries Biology, Natural Resources, or a closely related field
- A familiarity with standard sampling techniques used to survey North American freshwater fish
- Knowledge and proficiency in analyzing and interpreting biological data
- Supervisory experience and the ability to work cooperatively with others
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing and speech
* Preference will be given to candidates with a bachelor's degree in a natural resources field. Additional preference will be given to candidates with a master's degree in a wildlife-related natural resources field or other applicable field that is beneficial for the position. Qualifications Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Bachelor's degree in fisheries biology, natural resources, or a closely related field, or 2+ years of professional experience practicing freshwater or marine biology
- A familiarity with standard sampling techniques used to survey North American freshwater fish With at least two years of professional experience practicing in freshwater or marine biology. Techniques the candidate should have experience with include gill nets, seines, trap nets, and electrofishing.
- Knowledge of project planning, writing funding proposals, and project implementation.
- Knowledge and proficiency in analyzing and interpreting biological data
- Proficient with computers and technology. Must have experience using word processors, spreadsheets, and presentation software (e.g., MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Supervisory experience and the ability to work cooperatively with others
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing and speech
- Experience managing project budgets
- Published work in peer-reviewed scientific journals
- Preference given to applicants with a Master's degree or enrolled in a Master's degree program in fisheries biology, natural resources, or closely related field
- Proficiency or familiarity with statistical analysis programs such as Program R or SAS
- Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work-related documents.
- Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
- Monitoring/Assessing the performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.
- Teaching others how to do something.

- Risks that require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with contagious diseases or hazardous chemicals, etc.
- Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, and lift moderately heavy items (up to 75 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
