General Purpose Responsible for professional, technical and administrative work in preparing and maintaining landscaped areas and specialty gardens throughout the Village, to include all parks, Coral Pine Park Preserve, Village Municipal Center and rights-of-way.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.
- Develops and reviews short and long-term work plans for landscape maintenance programs and grounds keeping including pesticide application, irrigation maintenance, planting, transplanting, tree and plant installation & maintenance at parks and public areas.
- Manages the maintenance and protection of the Coral Pine Park Preserve.
- Manages the eradication of invasive plants and species and work towards protecting endangered species and bringing back species that have disappeared from the parks.
- Works under the guidelines outlined in the Parks and Recreation Master Plan and works in conjunction with the Parks and Recreation Director to update the Master Plan as needed or required in botanical/horticultural areas.
- Manages the preparation, maintenance, and evaluation of landscaped areas, including exhibits of native, ornamental, and exotic plant collections for public viewing. Conducts group tours as deemed appropriate.
- Oversees nursery, propagation, and landscape projects and grounds maintenance contracts.
- Conducts or oversees research and preparation of schedules and projections for future landscape and needs.
- Provides technical direction on horticultural issues. Ensures quality and suitability of purchased plant materials.
- Performs administrative duties including preparing reports, maintaining records, and ordering required materials, plants, supplies, and equipment.
- Attends bi-weekly staff meetings and other meetings as directed by the Parks and Recreation Director.
- Collaborates with the Recreation Superintendent on the development of new educational programming as needed.
- Responsible for the maintenance and inventory of all garden-related vehicles and tools.
- Assists the Director as needed in providing a narrative for horticulture and environmental grant applications.
- Oversees and assists in providing training to horticultural volunteers.
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience:Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in a related field such as Horticulture and three (3) years of experience in landscape maintenance and grounds keeping particularly with public gardens or equivalent combination of education and experience. Supervisory experience is a plus.
Additional Qualifications:- Must be certified or able to meet the requirements to obtain an American Society for Horticultural Science professional certification (ASHS-CPH).
- Must be computer literate and proficient in Microsoft Office programs including Word and Excel.
- Must have considerable knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
- Must have considerable knowledge of basic rules of safety and ability to enforce applicable rules and regulations.
- Must have good eyesight, including depth perception and the ability to distinguish colors.
- Must maintain high ethical, honesty and moral standards.
- Must be fluent in the English language. Ability to communicate in Spanish is a plus.
- Must be a non-smoker.
- Applicants must complete all requirements established by the Village of Pinecrest for employment. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: - Ability to represent the Parks and Recreation Department in both written and oral presentations.

- Ability to use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a licensed driver status in the State of Florida.
- Ability to balance, crouch, feel, finger, grasp, handle, lift/push/pull objects, reach, make repetitive motions with the hands, express ideas through speaking, use mental/visual faculties and hear sound.
- Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
