Description Your role at GEI. GEI's Water Resource practice is growing, and we are seeking an entry level Civil / Water Resources Engineer to join our team in Portland Maine. This position will be part of a connected team of GEI H&H professionals across the country solving complex and multi-disciplinary engineering problems, contributing to the planning and implementation of water resource projects in a variety of natural and urban settings.
Essential Responsibilities & Duties - Assist in planning and implementing water resource projects.
- Perform field work. Work may include construction observation and drilling observation and collection of soil and/or water samples.
- Coordinate and prepare technical analyses and reports for a variety of water resources projects including rainfall runoff evaluations, rainfall frequency analysis, probable maximum flood studies, inundation modeling and mapping, natural and man-made channel erosion studies, and sediment transport analysis.
- Execute technical projects and assignments in coordination with project managers and support staff. Example projects include dam removals/rehabilitation, hydrologic hazard analysis, dam failure consequence studies, river restoration, coastal flood analysis, culvert replacement, climate change resiliency planning.
- As part of an integrated team, work closely and collaboratively with other subject matter experts, project specialists, engineers, project managers, and project directors to execute projects effectively and efficiently.
- Develop spreadsheets and databases storing digitized data, documentation, and geo-referenced data; conduct technical analysis; and prepare written technical memoranda.
- Perform field work as needed to support projects.
Minimum Qualifications - 0 to 3 years of experience.
- B.S. in Civil Engineering or a Water Resources related field is required; M.S. considered a plus.
- Engineering Intern Certification (E.I.) or ability to obtain an E.I. within the first year of work.
- Working knowledge of hydrologic and hydraulic processes with the ability to apply principles to create computer models of watersheds, reservoirs, and riverine systems.
- Desire to acquire and apply new skills and techniques with application to project assignments.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Self-motivated and able to work both independently and as a team member.
- A valid driver's license and willingness to travel on temporary assignments as needed.
Preferred Qualifications - Hydrologic and hydraulic software modeling experience using HEC-RAS and HEC-HMS.
- Working knowledge of GIS tools and the ability to create and analyze topographic and bathymetric surfaces, create shapefiles, compute storage volumes, and process land cover and soil data.
- Experience with AutoCAD and Civil 3D software, with the ability to develop and interpret alignments, profiles, surfaces, and design plans, particularly to support water resource modeling program demands.
- Construction oversight/field engineering experience.
