The Commerce Managing Director is responsible for leading MITRE’s Department of Commerce work program through the Center for Enterprise Modernization (CEM) Federally Funded Research & Development Center (FFRDC). This position is the senior leader of a new MITRE division that serves a new co-sponsor of the CEM FFRDC (Dept of Commerce) with its own 5-year IDIQ contract. The work program currently includes 30+ projects across 10+ bureaus and department offices. Responsibilities include developing and executing strategies that align MITRE capabilities with sponsor priorities, from U.S. innovation and global competitiveness to transformative internal service capabilities. The position is responsible for setting the overall vision for the division and is also accountable for the division budget, workforce shaping, growth and performance results. The successful candidate must partner with Commerce sponsors, the Director of Commerce Strategy and Engagement, the CEM VP, and related sponsors to this domain, to build a stronger, more resilient US economy with good jobs for Americans by demonstrating credible expertise in Commerce Department and component bureau (e.g., NOAA, NIST, Census) missions and building strong MITRE capabilities and branding to assist the government in keeping the US economy and industries competitive globally. As an operator of FFRDCs, we help the government build a better tomorrow, for all. Roles & Responsibilities: Apply your deep understanding of how Commerce and other related federal organizations execute their missions, and what could be done to improve their execution. Develop close working relationships with sponsors and sponsor stakeholders, with the goal of become a trusted advisor for the sponsor organization. Lead the development and execution of strategic operating plans and desired mission outcomes for our sponsors and for this MITRE division. Proactively collaborate with leadership from other divisions and MITRE organizations to ensure that MITRE has a coordinated set of strategies that will deliver solutions for the government and our nation. Develop capabilities and apply deep and specialized technical expertise for the Commerce sponsor set, from IT to financial/economic mission needs, to administrative functions. Develop, shape, and execute annual workforce plans. Develop a strong team-including recruiting, hiring, terminations/transfers, coaching, conducting timely and accurate performance evaluations, and compensation determinations. Lead the creation and application of technical and domain knowledge that enhances MITRE's ability to provide value to sponsors, stakeholders, and the public. Identify and shape the technical direction of the work program and independent research & development initiatives that anticipate government challenges on the horizon; anticipates and champions changes in technical direction in support of the portfolio strategy. Identify the best strategic opportunities to collaborate and partner with other technical experts inside and outside MITRE, "bringing the world to bear" on solving difficult sponsor problems Lead project delivery across a large and diverse portfolio of direct work while meeting expectations for quality, cost, and schedule excellence. Basic Qualifications: Requires a minimum of 15 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 12 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 10 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience. Serve as a trusted advisor to our government sponsors. At least 10 years of FFRDC experience, at least 4 of which in support of Commerce and its agencies Active Top Secret Security Clearance. Will require working at main campus 4 days a week. Preferred Qualifications: Excellent communication, interpersonal, presentation, and influencing skills.
