The Office of Wildlife exists to provide wise stewardship of Louisiana's wildlife and associated habitats and increase wildlife conservation awareness.
BIOLOGIST DCL-B/ SPECIES MANAGEMENTThis position is a statewide position that serves as the department's expert and senior staff advisor to agency staff and the public regarding the game breeders program, nuisance wildlife control operators (NWCO), fox pen, hunting preserves, primate and potentially dangerous quadrupeds, native wildlife for film, wildlife rehabilitator program, falconry program and permits coordinator for the taking of nuisance deer, feral hogs and other nuisance wildlife species. This position requires statewide travel with some overnight stay and work nights, weekends, and holidays.
Supplemental Qualification:
Applicant must have two years of experience working with nuisance and/or injured wildlife.

Minimum QualificationsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A baccalaureate degree in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries management, animal science, forestry, natural resources, or conservation followed by six years of professional experience in wildlife or fisheries research, management or conservation; forestry; or in environmental science.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
Graduate training in qualifying fields may be substituted for up to one year of the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience.
A non-thesis master's degree in qualifying fields will substitute for one year of the required experience.
A master's degree with completed thesis in qualifying fields will substitute for two years of the required experience.
A Ph.D. in qualifying fields will substitute for two years of the required experience.
NOTE:
Examples of non-qualifying degrees are science education (of any discipline), geology, geography, nuclear science and agribusiness.
NOTE: Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

To serve as the highest-level State expert in biological programs and advise all interested parties of impacts and the possible consequences of those impacts. Serves as the state expert in the most complex specific areas of biological policy or other areas of technical or conservation expertise as defined by an approved DCL policy.
NOTE: This job is designated a Dual Career Ladder job as defined in CS Rule 1.14.1.1 and 5.9 requiring performance of higher level more complex duties and possession of advanced, specialized skills. A Civil Service Commission approved agency policy is required prior to implementation.

Statewide coordination of the Game Breeder, NWCO, Falconry, Fox Pen, Hunting Preserve, Primate and Potentially Dangerous Quadrupeds, Native Wildlife for film and Rehabilitator programs with technical staff.
Administers the annual enrollment and pen inspections as well as developing program rules and regulations.
Conducts inspections of permit holder facilities. This individual will recruit, certify, and permit NWCOs statewide.
Act as a high-level scientific and technical advisor to Biologist Directors, Division Administrators, and the Assistant Secretary for the Office of Wildlife regarding urban and nuisance wildlife animal populations.
Administers the wildlife rehabilitator program.
Participates in the Louisiana and National Rehabilitator Association to provide training for individuals interested in wildlife rehabilitation.
Maintains and oversees a computerized data collection and reference system for NWCO permits, fox pen, hunting preserves, falconry permits, wildlife rehabilitator permits, night shooting permits, primate and potentially dangerous quadrupeds, native wildlife for film, and special possession permits.
Writes and proofreads technical and non technical articles, papers, news releases, and correspondence; testifies at federal and state courts and legislative hearings as to biological resources and management practices.
Represents the department at local meetings and public forums with parish councils or police juries, with local conservation organizations, sportsmen, commercial fisherman organizations, or with local public agencies.
