General Statement of Job Performs technically skilled work in the field of aquatic plant control, maintaining canal aesthetics and assisting in the maintenance, repair, upkeep and operation of the City's stormwater and drainage control infrastructure. Interacts and communicates with Public Services supervisors, City personnel, and the public.
Work is performed under general supervision with moderate latitude in the use of initiative. Position exercises some independent judgment in accordance with defined policies, procedures, and techniques. Reports to the Stormwater Supervisor or designee.

Performs inspections of canal systems for aquatic plant encroachment and identifies plants; selects correct herbicide or biological agent and method of application to treat plants obstructing or hindering water movement.
Applies herbicides and chemicals to the roadsides, medians, and waterways owned and operated by the city, ensuring signs are posted to notify public of pending pesticide applications.
Maintains established spraying schedules and operates computerized spray rig and amphibious vehicles used in spraying and removing vegetation from canals and waterways.
Performs mechanical harvesting and removes plant material manually when conditions permit; cleans debris from canals and removes trees as well as extraneous material from waterways, which may include heavy objects, dead fish, and containers of unknown contents.
Performs repairs, maintenance, and operation of flood control gates, sometimes during heavy rain and high wind, to control canal elevations to prevent flooding.
Maintains required state applicator licenses, attending all necessary courses, seminars, and workshops per mandated timeline.
Ensures the establishment of safe work zones and compliance with all applicable safety requirements.
Helps with city projects of various types and interacts with the public to address all complaints that may arise.
Adheres to all City and public health and safety guidelines and protocols; performs job functions in a safe manner and reports all safety hazards per established policies and procedures.

Supervisory Responsibilities
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Pay and Bargaining Status
This is a non-exempt position pursuant to the Fair Labor Standards Act and is within the blue collar bargaining unit covered by the City of Tamarac and Federation of Public Employees (FPE) collective bargaining agreement. This position is paid on an hourly basis, issued bi-weekly, and subject to overtime pay in accordance with the terms of the current City of Tamarac and FPE collective bargaining agreement.
Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED required; supplemented by two (2) years of experience in stormwater construction, canal maintenance, construction of site improvements, aquatic plant control, commercial pesticide application; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training and/or experience.
Required Certifications and Licenses
Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida driver license and the ability to drive a city owned vehicle per established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
National Incident Management System (NIMS) training will be required (and sponsored) according to job duties and responsibilities.
Must have or obtain within six (6) months of hire, State of Florida Aquatic license and a State of Florida Rights-of-Way license, and within twelve (12) months of hire, a Florida Stormwater Association (FSA) Stormwater Operator Certification - Level 1.
