General FunctionThis position is only available to current, regular, full-time employees of Missouri State University.The Department Head is responsible for administering an academic department within a college which may include and is not limited to, faculty recruitment and development, faculty evaluation, program development, program review, curriculum development, student advisement, departmental budgeting and budget control, class schedule planning, and general supervision of the teaching, research, and service and related scholarly activities of the department.
Description of Primary Duties- 12-month appointment, initial 5-year appointment with annual review
- Ensure high standards of achievement, integrity and ethics for students, faculty and staff
- Promote faculty/student research, teaching, grantsmanship, and publication activity
- Ensure an active commitment to inclusive excellence
- Facilitate effective communication
- Lead recruitment/retention of students
- Recruit and mentor faculty and staff
- Evaluate and recommend faculty for retention, tenure, promotion, salary adjustment, leave and awards
- Administer all academic programs (undergraduate and master's level) of the School including scheduling, program review, assessment and accreditation
- Teach in the discipline
- Maintain ties with alumni and community
- Supervise support personnel and manage the School's space and facilities
- Plan and administer the School's budgets
- Promote fundraising for the School in consultation with the Dean, and other duties as needed.
Minimum Acceptable QualificationsThe minimum acceptable qualifications for the position of school director are prescribed by the College Dean in concert with guidance from the Provost. These include: possession of a terminal degree; at least three years of successful teaching, research and service experience; evidence of leadership experience; and a demonstrated commitment to Missouri State University's inclusive excellence principles.
Additional Qualifications- Candidates must present credentials including a PhD in geography, geology, planning, geospatial sciences, or a closely related field
- Must have a record of excellence in teaching, research and service sufficient to qualify for appointment as a tenured full or associate professor in the School of Earth, Environment and Sustainability.
- Candidates must have excellent interpersonal skills
- Must have excellent organizational skills and demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with diverse faculty, staff and students
- Must have outstanding written and oral communication skills, and a leadership style that is visionary and collaborative
- Outstanding candidates will also have a familiarity with national trends in general education, teacher education, and both graduate and undergraduate education in geography, geology, planning and geospatial sciences
- Will have experience with developing student learning outcomes and comprehensive assessment plans for all degree programs, and a record of participation in outreach activities
- Leadership that will champion the efforts to build a stronger and more prominent School at all levels and in all areas within it
- Demonstrated leadership experience is preferred
