General Purpose The Substation Standards Engineering Manager leads the substation standards team, encompassing civil, wound equipment, substation general, and major equipment disciplines. This role is pivotal to achieving corporate and organizational objectives.
Key responsibilities include developing and implementing technical solutions, engineering guidelines and policies, creating material specifications and construction standards, integrating advanced technologies into the electric grid, and publishing handbooks, requirement manuals, standards, and guidelines for engineering, design, constructability, and maintainability of substation assets.
Additionally, the manager is responsible for selecting, coaching, and developing employees, managing salaries, ensuring compliance with company programs and policies, and establishing and adhering to department goals and budgets. This role requires a strategic focus on advancing the company's substation standards and helping to ensure the reliability and efficiency of the electric system.
Responsibilities • Oversee and approve engineering standards activities supporting capital projects, ensuring compliance with regulations and best practices.
• Coordinate with design engineering to incorporate changes and provide alternatives for capital projects.
• Apply engineering and environmental principles to support substation operations, including technical studies, planning, and capital project implementation.
• Ensure field operations are supported with equipment failure resolution and construction support, maintaining effective communication and collaboration across departments.
• Manage supplier and material development activities related to substation equipment.
• Facilitate change, foster continuous improvement, and drive compliance with developed standards.
• Develop, approve, and implement standards for the design and construction of substations.
• Provide engineering and technical support for electric substation operations, ensuring alignment with industry practices and regulatory requirements.
• Develop processes to improve substation grid resiliency and oversee special projects aimed at enhancing grid reliability.
• Select, coach, develop, and evaluate standards engineers, ensuring their activities align with the department's goals and the company's strategic direction.
• Ensure the timely achievement of goals and deadlines for high-risk, high-value capital projects, including those involving power transformers.
Requirements • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited university.
• A minimum of 10 years' experience in operations, maintenance, engineering, or a related field.
• A minimum of three years' experience in people management.
• Management skills including the ability to establish objectives, execute policy, monitor resources, and manage the development or implementation of a system, program, or process.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives to completion and implementation.
• Excellent leadership skills including directing and motivating individuals who may not be direct reports.
• Knowledge of Company's strategic plan, objectives for specific area, as well as Company policies, procedures, and practices.
• Strong knowledge of state and federal safety and environmental regulations (OSHA, Title V, etc) and applicable codes such as NESC, IEEE.
• Knowledge and experience in the design, installation, operation of utility infrastructure including substation and transmission facilities from 46kV to 500kV
• Proficient with the use of personal computers including spreadsheet, database, word processing, presentation applications and SAP.
• Knowledge with distribution protection and control systems.
Preferences - • Advanced Degree.
• Professional Engineering Registration
• Supervisory experience or demonstrated leadership skills is highly desirable.
• Experience in budget preparation, analysis and cost tracking.
• Experience with facility constructability, process centered organizations, project management, contract administration and work planning, scheduling and tracking.
