The Horticulturist position for the City of West Monroe provides professional guidance, advisement and hands-on installation and upkeep concerning horticulture, arboriculture, flora, fauna, and landscape management for the City.
SPECIFIC TASKS, DUTIES, & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Executes and provides training/guidance to grounds maintenance crews in the proper care and maintenance of particular flora and fauna as selected by the City
- Executes and provides training/guidance to grounds maintenance crews in the proper techniques and methods for the pruning, care and management of flora and fauna
- Provides for the evaluation and analysis of current landscape architecture on public property and develops recommendations for modifications to improve the aesthetics of properties and best practices for economic efficiencies
- Participates in developing short and long-term goals and objectives for the department in concert with the City's mission, vision, and strategic initiatives
- Develops recommendations for routine and preventive maintenance of associated disease, growth management, and grounds maintenance and design challenges
- Maintains current knowledge of trends and developments in the horticulture industry for application to functional assignment area(s)
- Maintain the green house and propagation activities required for the maintenance and seasonal plantings throughout the City
- Assisting other areas with any needs, requests, or concerns
- All other duties as assigned
WORKER REQUIREMENTS (education, certifications, experience, etc.)
- High School diploma or GED required
- Degree or Specialized Certifications required
- 3 years minimum experience preferred
- Valid driver's license required
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Able to comprehend, retain, and carry out instructions, as well as anticipate logistics
- Able to multitask
- Sound knowledge of safety measures and risk management strategies
- Organizational and time management skills
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS
- Capable of performing physical labor, some of which can be demanding
- Able to constantly stand, walk, bend, and reach for items (may be repetitive motions)
- Able to lift, push/pull a weight of up to 50lbs+
- Able to traverse rough terrain; walk up or down stairwells, ladders or steps
- Withstand extended exposure variable temperatures (including extreme hot/cold)
- Perform job around various elements (i.e., animals, dust, and allergens)
