Position Overview:
The Director of Strategy and Portfolio Management is a key leadership role focused on shaping and driving the strategic direction of the company's product portfolio in North America. This role involves leading the development and execution of both long-term and short-term strategies, ensuring cross-functional alignment, and overseeing the entire product lifecycle from a commercial perspective. The position requires a deep understanding of market dynamics, competitive landscapes, and financial imperatives to guide the portfolio toward sustainable growth and profitability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Planning:
Lead the formulation and execution of the Strategic plan, ensuring alignment with the company's overarching business objectives and market opportunities. - Tactical Strategy Implementation:
Lead the tactical/execution Plan process across all relevant functions, ensuring that departmental efforts are aligned and contribute to the overall strategic goals. - Portfolio Strategy Management:
Manage the product portfolio's lifecycle, from strategic planning of new product introductions to the phase-out of end-of-life products, ensuring that all decisions are aligned and contribute to market leadership. - Cross-Functional Alignment:
- Drive collaboration across functions (Marketing, Sales, and Market Access) to ensure all strategic initiatives are integrated across the organization, including scenario planning, competitive analysis, and risk mitigation.
- Leads monthly CMR (Commercial management review) meetings to ensure cross functional alignment regarding portfolio launches and strategic initiatives.
- Scenario Planning & Strategic Risk Management:
Lead scenario planning efforts and identify strategic risks, developing mitigation strategies to ensure portfolio decisions are resilient and forward-looking. - Ad-Hoc Strategic Initiatives: Lead and manage unique, high impact projects that arise outside of regular portfolio planning cycles, ensuring that these one-off initiatives align to overall business.
- Commercial Understanding:
- Demonstrate an understanding of business drivers and influence them to achieve flawless execution.
- Understand customer needs and operations.
- Incorporate consumer and customer insights and trends into strategy and tactics.
- Commercial Leadership: Act as a consultant to Sales, Market access, and Marketing Directors on appropriate commercial strategies. Serve as the lead with the Global PMO team on commercial portfolio strategies.
- Building and Leading Teams:
- Promote cross-functional understanding between Sales, Marketing, and market access teams. Achieve results through effective team leadership rather than individual effort.
- Demonstrate a record of successful talent development through direct or indirect reporting relationships. Proactively manage talent and create development opportunities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- University degree required in business/scientific-related disciplines; MBA strongly preferred due to the business complexity of the position.
- Approximately 8-10 years of experience with a successful track record in leading commercial functions, including people management.
- Previous assignments in Commercial or Sales are essential in the healthcare sector.
- Strong analytical skills: ability to analyze data from a wide range of internal and external sources and translate these into powerful insights for strategic decisions and tactical focus.
- Strong financial skills are ideal.
- Cross-functional/divisional project management experience is critical.
- Excellent presentation, communication, and motivational skills.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills for collaboration across functions; outstanding communication and presentation abilities.
