DefinitionUnder direction, is responsible for supervising employees engaged in planting and cultivating trees, plants, and shrubs, and maintaining landscaped grounds and/or tree nursery; performs related duties as required.

- Supervises a crew engaged in the planting, care, and maintenance of flowers, shrubs, and trees, and the maintenance of landscaped grounds and tree nursery; inspects completed work;
- Approves/disapproves vacation requests; initiates disciplinary actions as necessary;
- Instructs personnel on horticulture techniques and safety procedures for gardening, handling materials, and using tools and equipment;
- Prepares work schedules, signs performance evaluations, and submits periodic reports;
- Designs and constructs flower, shrub, and tree displays, landscaped layouts, gardens, and seasonal displays;
- Plans and schedules plant production; orders plant materials, chemicals, and supplies;
- Collects andgrows plants from seeds, cuttings, and/or seedlings; transplants trees;
- Inspects plants for diseases and pest infestations;
- Mixes and applies pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, and fertilizer to flowers, trees, shrubs, and landscaped grounds;
- Prunes flowers, trees, and shrubs; maintains gardens and landscaped grounds;
- Operates a computer to initiate and update work orders and complete reports;
- Operates and performs minor maintenance on machinery and vehicles; checks fluid levels, greases parts, and sharpens and/or replaces pruner and mower blades.
Minimum QualificationsFour (4) years of nursery, greenhouse, and/or professional gardening experience. Substitution(s): Six (6) courses in arboriculture, floriculture, horticulture, entomology, or plant pathology may substitute for two (2) years of the required experience.
Possession of a valid Commercial Applicator License (Ornamental Plant and Shade Tree Pest Control category) issued by the Ohio Department of Agriculture.
Possession of a valid driver's license.

The examination process will consist of a 100% computerized examination covering Planning and Organizing, Reading Comprehension, Problem Sensitivity, Gardening Knowledge and Safety, Map Reading, Public Relations, and Microsoft Outlook 2016/2019.
Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time.
All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.
