Position Information The purpose of this classification is to operate the recycling convenience center, to include evaluating materials brought into facility, directing customers to appropriate bins, receiving payments from customers, operating compactors, cleaning areas around bins, and performing related tasks.
THIS POSITION WILL BE AVAILABLE JANUARY 2025. Job Summary The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.Opens/closes recycling convenience center facilities each day, following established procedures; locks/unlocks buildings/gates, activates/de-activates alarm system, and unlocks safe; reports problems to supervisor.
Performs customer service functions; provides assistance and information related to department facilities, services, fees, procedures, or other issues; responds to routine questions, complaints, or requests for service; researches problems and initiates problem resolution.
Determines whether nature of materials brought into recycling convenience center is appropriate for acceptance; provides guidelines and information on solid waste disposal and facility operations to customers and the public; explains options for disposal of hazardous materials, toxic materials, or otherwise non-disposable materials; directs customers with non-disposable materials to landfill or elsewhere as appropriate.
Directs customers in the proper separation of refuse and disposal procedures; counts number of bags deposited by customers and calculates appropriate charges; monitors activities to ensure placement of materials into appropriate bins; retrieves inappropriate items from bins as necessary; notifies vendors of full bins and maintains records regarding transport of materials from facility.
Receives money in payment of facility fees; records transactions and issues receipts; counts and balances money; ensures security of revenues; prepares bank deposits and forwards as appropriate.
Operates compactors to compact refuse; monitors operations and condition of compactors to identify potential problems.
Performs cleaning/maintenance tasks; cleans up spilled liquids and garbage on facility grounds; cleans and disinfect all bins, tanks and containers contaminated with oil, leacheate or residue from garbage & recyclables that may create unsanitary conditions or pose a threat to the environment, ; keep building and work area swept, organized and clean; performs minor building repair tasks.
Prepares and maintains records of work activities; prepares reports of daily cash receipts and submits to supervisor; maintains records of customer volume; maintains log book of hours worked by community service workers.
Operates a variety of equipment and tools associated with work activities, which may include a compactor, cash register, safe, telephone, vacuum cleaner mop, shovel, rake, broom, sprayer, mechanic tools, or carpentry tools.
Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, receipts, daily transaction reports, customer counts, bank deposit slips, time sheets, or other documents.
Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, lists, payments, log books, recycling pickup reports, community service work logs, vendor lists, operation guides, policies, procedures, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, community service workers, other departments, vendors, customers, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONSAssists in monitoring activities of community service workers assigned to work detail; provides training as needed; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work.
This classification is designated as a safety sensitive position which is subject to random drug and alcohol testing and any other drug testing methods as stated in policies adopted by Forsyth County concerning drug and alcohol.
Performs general or clerical tasks, which may include answering telephone calls, posting signs on full bins, transporting mail or other documentation, or performing light cleaning/housekeeping tasks.
Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed.
Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED; supplemented by two (2) months previous experience and/or training involving recycling center operations, general office work, customer service, or general maintenance work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Part-time Regular employees receive personal leave accrual at 1/2 the rate of the full time employees.
