Job Overview:The Procurement Forester is responsible for sourcing, planning, and managing timber and other forest resources to meet production needs. This role involves working with landowners, contractors, and suppliers to establish long-term, sustainable supply chains. The Procurement Forester will monitor forest health, oversee harvesting activities, ensure regulatory compliance, and support sustainability initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:- Resource Planning and Acquisition
- Identify and assess forest areas for sustainable timber harvesting.
- Negotiate contracts with landowners and suppliers to secure raw materials.
- Develop and maintain relationships with private landowners, timber brokers, and contractors.
- Harvesting and Operational Management
- Coordinate and oversee timber harvesting activities, ensuring compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
- Monitor contractor performance and ensure adherence to contractual terms and sustainable forestry practices.
- Conduct field visits to assess forest conditions, measure timber volume, and monitor harvest quality.
- Supply Chain and Logistics
- Manage logistics for transporting timber from forests to processing facilities.
- Work closely with the logistics team to optimize delivery schedules and reduce transportation costs.
- Sustainability and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal forestry regulations.
- Participate in sustainability certification processes (e.g., FSC, PEFC) to validate that forestry practices meet industry standards.
- Implement and promote sustainable forestry practices that enhance biodiversity, forest health, and carbon sequestration.
- Data Management and Reporting
- Track and report on procurement activities, including harvest volumes, costs, and sustainability metrics.
- Use forest inventory and GIS tools to map and analyze forest resources.
- Maintain accurate records of timber purchases, contracts, and regulatory compliance.
Qualifications:- Bachelor's degree in Forestry, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Experience in forestry operations, timber procurement, or natural resource management.
- Knowledge of forestry regulations, sustainable forestry practices, and certification standards (FSC, PEFC).
- Proficiency with GIS mapping software and forest inventory tools.
- Strong negotiation, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to work outdoors in varied terrain and weather conditions.
Preferred Skills:- Experience in forest inventory management and forest health assessment.
- Familiarity with forest certification processes and standards.
- Knowledge of sustainable forestry initiatives and carbon management practices.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to remote field sites as needed.
