Under supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor), incumbent will support CWD sampling of deer and elk from CWD management zones and adjacent zones. To include, but may not be limited to, organizing and directing Scientific Aides to collect CWD samples from hunter harvested or other deer or elk mortalities; staff and manage mandatory or voluntary hunter check (CWD sampling); engage State, Federal, and Tribal Nations to identify areas of deer congregation and high use; and participate in deer surveys, whether aerial (fixed wing or helicopter) or ground. This position is a 12-month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.
If you currently have permanent status in your position and have passed probation, you have mandatory reinstatement rights into your former position at the end of this LT appointment. If you have not had prior permanent or probationary civil service status, you will be separated from state service.
During this 12-month Limited Term assignment, you will receive full health, dental, and vision benefits! You will also earn State Service and accrue monthly leave credits.

Working Conditions Willingness to work irregular hours including weekends and holidays and to travel in performing field work throughout the State. Field activities may include strenuous physical activity in variable weather conditions for up to 10 hours. Ability to work outdoors in remote areas with uneven terrain. Ability to lift heavy and irregular items (up to 40 lbs.) required. Ability to drive for extended periods of time (up to 8 hours) and wear a uniform, if required. Possession of a valid driver license required. Office setting requires using computer keyboard at least several hours a day and involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods. Occasional meetings at Sacramento-area offices required. In addition to working with Sacramento-based staff, may interact with Branch and Regional staff and members of the public, in the field, via email and telephone. Will primarily work in an office setting and/or remotely in congruence with COVID-19 safety best practices. The position may require the incumbent to wear a uniform identifying the employee as CDFW staff.

Possess a degree in wildlife management, conservation, biology, zoology, physiology, ecology or closely related field;
Prior experience collecting and handling biologic samples an associated data;

Willingness to work on statewide teams comprised of other scientists;
Experience working with wildlife or fish; experience or knowledge of adaptive management and conservation techniques.
