Position Title:Fish and Wildlife Technician Senior (Aquatic Invasive Species Senior Technician)
Job Description:Make a Difference in Oregon's Natural Resources! Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon's fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations.This limited duration position is with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) located in Ontario, Oregon, and will last through June 30, 2025.
We will also consider a Job Rotation for current, regular status employees of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in good standing in a permanent or limited duration position (not temporary or seasonal) that is expected to continue through at least June 30, 2025. Please attach approval from your current manager to be considered for this job rotation in the resume/cover letter section of your application.What you will do:Aquatic Invasive Species Program Coordination- Assist in operations and oversite of established watercraft inspection stations in Umatilla and Ontario.
- Assist in training, scheduling, directing, and reviewing field activities.
- Provides input into performance appraisals and assists with hiring.
- Ensures crew safety, data quality, and timely completion of field work.
- Assist in the opening and closing seasonal inspection station.
- Purchases and distribution of field equipment, office supplies, and other items appropriate for the program.
- Ordering and record keeping of program vehicles.
- Keep field equipment operational and in good working condition.
- This position will inspect watercraft entering Oregon at designated locations around the state for quagga and zebra mussels and other aquatic invasive species.
- Using established protocol for decontaminating affected watercraft for aquatic invasive species
Outreach & Education- Use watercraft inspections as an education and outreach opportunity informing members of the public about the potential of aquatic invasive species entering Oregon and the ecological and economic consequences.
- Prepare and make presentations that educate and informs the public about AIS.
- Staff booths at boating and sportsmen expo's, fishing tournaments, and at other designated venues to educate boat owners on proper ways to clean or decontaminate watercraft.
- Provide aquatic invasive species training courses to agency personnel and the public.
- Respond to questions from public via email, telephone or in person.
Data and Reporting- Responsible for data management: Quality assurance and quality control, summarizes data into tables and figures that can be interpreted, and may conduct basic statistical analyses.
- Legislative annual report which includes interpretation of data and writing report sections.
- Prepares aquatic invasive species protocols and procedure manuals for agency staff.

Working Conditions - The person in this position must be detail oriented when correcting data and inspecting and decontaminating watercraft. Must also be persuasive and diplomatic when dealing with the general public and sometimes angry individuals. Statewide travel is also required along with a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record. This position also requires working some weekends and holidays and in inclement weather.
- Ability to work with aquatic invasive species and fish identification keys is essential. Experience in the use of computers, data analysis software, data loggers, and boat operation is helpful. Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and have the ability to maintain good public relations with citizens, local residents, other government agencies, anglers and sportsmen groups for the benefit of the Department's working relationships and image.
- Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours. Occasionally required to work weekends, holidays and vacation relief at inspection stations and may have to respond to emergency situations while working alone.
- This position requires a Boater Education Card obtained through the Oregon State Marine Board. There are some exceptions to this (e.g., Coast Guard Boat Operator License or commercial fishing license). For further information, access the Web site at www.boatoregon.com. If the selected applicant does not possess a card, they must obtain it before completion of the trial service period as a condition of continued employment.
- Occasional use of a state-issued credit card (SPOTS card).

We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience: Minimum Qualifications:- An Associate degree in Fisheries, Wildlife or Agriculture Technology, Aquaculture and two years and six months of in a wildlife or fisheries program (Twelve months of fisheries, wildlife or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience); OR
- A Bachelor's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Bachelor's degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework and one year of wildlife or fish culture (care of fish) experience. (Six months of fisheries, wildlife or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience); OR
- Eighteen months of experience in the care of livestock, agricultural research and experimentation, monitoring game or wildlife, or farming and Two years of fisheries, wildlife or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience.
