DescriptionThe Role:This is the first level in the Service Worker series. The Aquatic Maintenance Service Worker performs skilled and semi-skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work in an assigned area of responsibility.
The ideal candidate for the role will have one year of experience in construction, maintenance, and repair work and/or in the operation of light, medium and heavy equipment related to area of assignment.

Holiday, Vacation, and Sick Leave:Regular status position's offer:
- The City of Glendale observes 10.5 holidays per year, and full-time employees are also granted an additional 12 hours of holiday special leave per calendar year to celebrate their cultural or religious holidays.
- Vacation leave accrues at 5.33 hours per pay period (138 hours per year), and increases to 6.12 hours after 5 years, and to 7.6 hours after 10 years of service.
- Sick leave accrues at 4.4 hours per pay period (114 hours per year).
Retirement:- This position participates in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS).
- Contribution is mandatory, and the current contribution rate is 12.29%.
Essential Functions - Performs skilled and semi-skilled construction, maintenance and repair work on pools and splash pads, landscaping, and repair of specialized equipment.
- Operates various light, medium, and heavy equipment including pool vacuums, pallet jacks, trucks, truck with trailers, and motors, pumps and valves.
- May provide general direction to other employees and volunteers.
- Uses various hand and power tools to accomplish tasks.
- Explains and enforces rules and regulations pertaining to safety, maintenance, and operation of aquatic equipment.
- Notifies residents and businesses of work being performed, answers questions from citizens.
- Maintains daily work records; may perform some computerized data entry work.
- Transports and sets up supplies and equipment; makes required safety checks.
- Performs skilled and semi-skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work for the city aquatic centers and splash pads.
- Participate in summer aquatics maintenance schedule to include holidays. Work schedule will be Thursdays through Mondays; Tuesdays and Wednesdays off.
- Assist with other tasks and maintenance duties with other departments with the Recreation Division.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications/Special Requirements/Success FactorsOne year of experience in construction, maintenance, and repair work and/or in the operation of light, medium and heavy equipment related to area of assignment.
Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education. Knowledge of:- Rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to area of assignment
- Materials, tools, equipment, safety hazards and precautions common to the assigned areas of responsibility
- Hazard, safety rules, precautions related to equipment operation
- Traffic laws, ordinances, rules and regulations as they relate to equipment operation
- Street layouts and routes
- Confined space entry procedures.
Ability to:- Read and understand blue prints, technical diagrams, and maps
- Barricade work sites according to the Phoenix barricade manual
- Understand and follow safe working practices
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Deal courteously with the public
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and citizens
- Operate and perform maintenance and minor repair on light, medium, and heavy equipment
- Perform general maintenance and service requirements of equipment in area of responsibility
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions and work independently - Accurately and timely complete reports and logs; record daily work activities and enter and retrieve information on computers
- Identify paint coatings for material and color matching
- Operate and understand atmospheric sensing devices.
- Maintain the appropriate state of Arizona driver license with relevant endorsements.
- Coordinate hand and eye movements
- Operate city vehicles; depending on area of assignment, operate vehicles which require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
Special Requirements- This position is classified as safety-sensitive which requires candidates to successfully undergo drug and alcohol testing prior to employment. They will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy. A post-offer physical assessment is required. The City of Glendale will incur the cost of all required testing.
- Valid Arizona class D driver license.
- Valid Commercial Driver's License with endorsements is required for some positions and some positions require the ability to obtain a CDL within 90 days.
- Work Zone Certification is required for some positions.
- A WCISA Tree Worker Certification may be required for some positions within Right-Of-Way within six months of hire.
- The Arizona Restricted Pesticide Certification may be required for some positions within Right-Of-Way within six months of hire.
- Position in the Streets/Right of Way/Landscape division require a Class A CDL with Tanker (N) endorsement within 6 months of hire.
- Positions in Signs and Markings require possession of a Class B CDL within 90 days of hire and an International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Work Zone OR ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor Certificate within one year of hire. In addition, possession of IMSA Signs and Markings Level I certificate is desirable.
- Landscape/Right of Way employees are subject to call back, stand-by duty, and evening, weekend and rotating shifts.
- Some positions require Arizona Restricted use of Pesticide Certification or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.

Physical Requirements/Working ConditionsWork involves heavy digging, heavy lifting of 50 to 75 pounds, pushing/pulling trash containers and other objects, operating hand-held hydraulic jackhammers, extensive walking, bending, standing, lifting, raking and crawling; standing on ladders. Enters, exits, and operates city vehicles; depending on area of assignment, may enter, exit, and operate vehicles which require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Exposure to heavy traffic, weather extremes; hazardous materials, dust, insects and gases.
