Description of Work Unit The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

Position Summary Fort Johnson, located in west central Louisiana, is an U.S. Army installation that encompasses nearly 200,000 acres of land. Fort Johnson conducts a wide range of training with an emphasis on realistic training exercise and scenarios. Approximately 105,000 acres at Fort Johnson are designated a Wildlife Management Area in collaboration with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. Fort Johnson's natural resources are managed through an Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan (INRMP) which outlines the installation's natural resources, goals and objectives, and a work plan detailing management projects.
This in-person position will support the Fort Johnson Conservation Branch through working with the INRMP Program Manager and CSU/CEMML staff to execute Game, Fish, and Wildlife projects. These projects include, but are not limited to:
- Implementing the fisheries management plan
- Planting and maintaining wildlife food plots
- Population surveys and habitat management for game birds
- Population surveys for white-tailed deer, including deer check stations which requires two weekends a year
- Forest prescriptions for improving game species habitat
- The removal and/or treatment of nuisance/invasive species
- Other game projects as they become prioritized and funded
- Support for other program areas as it becomes necessary
- Additional work will include coordination with installation staff, attending meetings, data management, equipment maintenance, outreach, maneuver damage inspections, special events, and development of deliverables.
Required Job Qualifications - High School Diploma.
- Experience working with wildlife.
- Experience conducting fieldwork, and accurately recording, entering, and proofing data.
- Demonstrated proficiency using field data collection applications, compasses, maps, data tablets, and GPS units.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access).
- Capable of walking several consecutive miles carrying light gear of up to 30 pounds and performing light manual labor in adverse weather and rugged terrain.
- Must have a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain a driver's license by the employment start date.
- The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Preferred Job Qualifications - A bachelor's degree in wildlife management, botany, horticulture, biology, ecology, or a closely related science.
- 1+ year(s) of experience with wildlife management, natural resource management, or invasive species management.
- 1+ year(s) of field work experience with wildlife.
- Experience with GPS and GIS technologies.
- Experience working on a military installation and interacting with military staff, and familiarity with DoD/Army environmental and safety regulations.
- Experience working at Fort Johnson.
- Experience working in Louisiana and/or Southern ecosystems.

Duty/Responsibility - Fisheries: implementation of the fisheries management plan to include, but not limited to; population sampling via electrofishing and netting/seining, water quality testing and reporting, aquatic vegetation control (mechanical and herbicide), water control structure maintenance and repair, and fish stocking.
- Food plots: implement food plot management to include, but not limited to; operation of heavy farm and other appropriate equipment to prepare, seed, fertilize, and manage wildlife food plots.
- Game birds: game bird management to include, but not limited to; spring whistle and gobbler counts, fall covey census, and other population management activities for the northern bobwhite quail and eastern wild turkey.
- White-tailed deer: white-tailed deer management and monitoring to include, but not limited to; deer spotlight census, browse surveys, and other population density techniques to support determinations of her density. Ability to work up to 2 weekends a year (5, 16 hour days) during mandatory white-tailed deer check efforts at the Fort Johnson and Peason Wildlife Management Areas.
- Forest prescriptions: conduct field surveys to evaluate game species habitat for forest prescriptions.
- Nuisance/Invasive species: assist the Integrate Pest Management Program and other Fort Johnson directorates with nuisance species as requested.
- Other game projects: assist with other game monitoring, management, and special projects/events as requested.
- Other programs: Assist with other program areas to include, but not limited to; non-game, botany, endangered species, and other programs as requested.
