Firefighter Job Description City of Yazoo City DEFINITION: To control and extinguish fires, protecting life and property, and conduct rescue efforts. Position takes direction from the Lieutenant or Battalion Chief for emergency scene operations within an efficient and safe manner. SUPERVISON RECEIVED AND EXERCISED : Directly reports to the Lieutenant or Battalion Chief Receives general supervision and administrative direction from the Battalion Chief and Captain EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBLITIES AND DUTIES : Preservation of life, safety and property conservation of the citizens and surrounding areas Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Respond to fire alarms and other calls for assistance and rescue victims from burning structures and accident sites Administer first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation or other breathing devices to injured persons until medical assistance personnel arrive Search burning structures to locate fire victims Operate firefighting equipment Wear appropriate PPE, such as fire-resistant clothing and breathing apparatus Move towards the source of the fire using knowledge of types of fires, construction design, building materials, and physical layout of properties Position and climb ladders to gain access to upper levels of structures or to rescue individuals from burning structures Take action to contain hazardous chemicals that might catch fire, leak, or spill Assess fires and situations and report conditions to superiors to receive instructions using two-way radios Other duties as assigned. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES KNOWLEDGE: Organizational practices as applied to the operations of the Fire Department Pertinent federal, State and City of Yazoo Ordinances, rules and regulations Ability to complete Mississippi State Fire Academy certification Relevant equipment, policies, procedures and strategies to promote effective safety and security and protection of people, data, property and institutions Firefighting equipment and tools, including designs, uses, repair, and maintenance Public safety education, fire origins and determinations Know the structural locations of assigned area, equipped to respond to designated alarm within a specified timeframe Pertinent laws and codes governing fire suppression regulations SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to make reports and keep records Competence in computer applications Extensive knowledge of the overall operations of the City of Yazoo including policies, procedures, and ordinances Ability to remain calm and to follow directions when under pressure or in an emergency Ability to carry out duties in a manner according fire safety principles and procedures Use fire apparatus, fire pumps, hoses and other standard firefighting equipment, ladders, first aid equipment, and pager Additional physical abilities to sit, walk stand use hand fingers, handle and operate pressure force in all weather conditions. Occasionally climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and or crawl Ability to lift and move a minimum of fifty pounds EXPERIENCE & GUIDELINES: High School Diploma/GED Ability to complete State Fire Academy curriculum Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is acceptable Position requires physical abilities of sitting, standing, reaching, bending and flexible use of hands and wrists for periods of time, including visual acuity and listening skills The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this job.
