Duties:
- Acts as lead worker of sanitation workers.
- Performs various manual labor & semi-skilled tasks related to recycling & refuse collection & disposal.
- Operates & maintains light & medium-sized equipment, including recycling/refuse trucks & vehicles over 27-ton capacity.
- Prepares & maintains records of recycling activities.
- Removes recyclables from vehicles & loads them into packer trucks.
- Drives & unloads packer trucks in Salina & surrounding areas.
- Ensures non-recyclable materials are not accepted.
- Responds to citizens' inquiries about recycling procedures.
- Cleans & maintains the facility & grounds.
- Washes trucks & performs routine maintenance checks.
- Conducts minor equipment repairs.
Education: High school diploma or G.E.D.
Experience:
- Two (2) years of experience operating refuse packers or medium equipment in construction, maintenance, or related fields preferred.
- Experience in manual labor, preferably in waste management, recycling, construction, or other heavy physical labor roles; knowledge of waste disposal or recycling procedures is beneficial.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks for extended periods, including lifting heavy objects & enduring outdoor work in adverse weather conditions.
Requirements:
- Must possess a valid Kansas driver's license at hire.
- Preferred possession of a Class B commercial driver's license (CDL) with air brake endorsements, or ability to obtain within one (1) year from the start date of employment.
The City of Salina will pay enrollment fees & pay hourly wages for employees to attend CDL training at Salina Area Technical College.
Work Type: Medium, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to more objects.
Machines, Tools, Equipment: Brooms, dump trucks, lifts, packers, power washer, rakes, sanitation trucks, & shovels.
Hours: Wednesday - Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Starting pay: $20.92-21.97/hr. DOQ
- Additional $1.50/hour paid for hours worked after 6:00 p.m. & before 6:00 a.m.
Paid Time Off:
- 48 hours of vacation available upon hire; additional 48 hours earned during the year (96 hours in first year).
- 96 hours of sick leave during first year.
