General Description of the Position The Environmental Engineer position reports to the Associate Research Director (ARD) and the Associate Dean of Research (ADR) at Delaware State University (DSU), College of Agriculture, Science, and Technology (CAST). CAST seeks to address major society-scale challenges, including cost-effective infrastructure renewal, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and sustainable and resilient built environments that support diverse and equitable social systems. The Environmental Engineer will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to conceptualize and develop innovative engineering approaches to quantify and simulate complex, multifaceted agriculture systems issues. This role serves as technical advisor for developing, evaluating, and implementing Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation policies with special emphasis on conducting research, analyzing data, effecting environmental statutes and regulations, and related approaches for developing and revising policy. The Environmental Engineer will lead efforts in drafting legislation and regulatory policy addressing climate adaptation and mitigation efforts in enforcement and compliance activities. Examples of emerging areas of interest include, but are not limited to, next generation concepts for high performance, sustainable, and low-cost materials; new approaches to materials/processes for decarbonization or electrification; application of advanced computational and data science methods in modeling, simulation, and design; end-to-end, concept-to-product integration of environmental engineering for efficient operation. Applicants should have proven research experience beyond a Ph.D. and articulate how their developed research program will integrate with or facilitate collaborative interactions within and beyond the discipline. This role is also responsible for independently designing and implementing research projects or programs as well as advancing innovation/tech transfer activity.
Essential Functions & Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Essential Functions- The following are the functions essential to performing this role.
- Develop an externally funded research program leading to national and international recognition, pertaining to environmental design and engineering at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and to contribute to the operation and promotion of the department, college, university, and the profession.
- Develop collaborative research projects, and to directly support the mission of the College/University engineering initiative.
- Train graduate and undergraduate students in engineering (e.g., mass/energy balances, thermodynamics, reaction engineering, transport phenomena, or process design and control).
- Explore projects related to carbon transformations, advanced separations and reaction chemistry for a sustainable climate, energy, and environmental future.
- Demonstrated interest and expertise in developing novel functional materials, computational molecular scale simulations, electrochemistry, photochemistry, interfacial phenomena in multiphase environments.
- Responsibilities include engaging in developing research-practice partnerships with local school districts, government offices, community organizations and external stakeholders.
- Research tasks include conducting design-based implementation research (DBIR), facilitating experiential learning; collecting observational, survey and data; analyzing data qualitatively and through mixed-methods approaches; presenting findings at research and practitioner conferences and at community events; co-authoring publications with research team and partners.
- Consulting with and mentoring teams of graduate and undergraduate students; coordinating projects' activities, including scheduling, and facilitating meetings, assigning tasks and supporting research assistants, managing communication among partners.

- Provides a balance of research, analysis, and engineering support on a broad range of issues related to agriculture and energy efficiency.
- Perform research that connects agriculture needs with policies that help lower technology adoption barriers and accelerate technology adoption.
- Provides environmental engineering services to internal collaborators and extremal customers.
- Engage in departmental, college and university-level service activities, as well as participate in national and international professional activities.

- Build expertise relevant to a variety of technologies and contribute to impactful projects that address key challenges and opportunities related to the engineering sector in the U.S. Candidates must demonstrate commitment to equity-focused research; advanced expertise in academic writing and editing; and expertise in leading research initiatives and teams.
- Support extension and outreach to stakeholders; and collaborating with disadvantaged communities to increase and maintain access to water, wastewater, and solid waste facilities.
- Contribute to detailed research reports, white papers, fact sheets, and regulatory comments, and to presentation materials including formal presentations, seminars, and short courses.
- Coordinate and collaborate with numerous research faculty on cross-cutting research projects as well as with external colleagues and partners.
- Other duties as assigned by the PI/Dean.

Qualification Standards - Education: Preferred: Degree in professional engineering. To be acceptable, the background must: be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
- 3+ years of experience with environmental planning.
- Working knowledge of Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, National Preservation Act, Section 4(f) and other state and fed eral environmental laws and regu(ations.
- Strong knowledge and experience in interpreting, applying and documenting federal, state and local safety; Department of Transportation, and environmental regulations.
- Knowledge of area-specific federal and state environmental laws and regulations required.
- Successful experience: One or more years of successful experience in managing, analyzing, and reporting using Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Access, and PowerPoint.
