Join the Roadway Hydraulics team at the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT)! We are dedicated to innovative and sustainable water management that supports Nebraska's highway infrastructure. Pay range is $34.857 -$51.383 per hour. The pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints if approved.
If unable to fill at the Professional Engineer I level, will consider applicants at the Engineer level which requires a bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline. Must obtain Engineer Intern Enrollment (Engineering in Training Certification) within one year of employment. Pay rate for this classification is $30.577 per hour.
What You'll Do:As a Water Resources Engineer, you will:
- Design and analyze hydraulic systems such as culverts, storm sewers, detention basins, energy dissipators, and more.
- Conduct hydrologic studies, including peak flow calculations and drainage basin delineations.
- Perform floodplain analyses and prepare certifications to ensure compliance with FEMA and state regulations.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, and stakeholders.
- Guide and train design staff and consultants on hydrology and hydraulics best practices.
- Develop technical documentation, including Section 408 submittals for USACE-regulated projects.
- Review drainage studies, hydrology reports, and hydraulic designs to support NDOT project delivery.
- Participate in research initiatives and technical advisory committees (TAC) for innovative projects.
Requirements / Qualifications:Minimum Qualifications:Engineer: Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline. Must obtain Engineer Intern Enrollment (Engineering in Training Certification) within one year of employment.
Professional Engineer I: Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline. Must possess a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license at the time of application and be licensed by the Nebraska Board of Engineers and Architects at the time of employment or be able to obtain such license within 90 days of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:- Education: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field (emphasis on water resources preferred).
- Licensure: Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain one within a specified timeframe.
- Experience: Proficiency with modeling tools (e.g., HEC-RAS, HY-8, FHWA Hydraulic Toolbox) and familiarity with hydrology methods (e.g., Rational Method, NRCS).
- Skills: Analytical problem-solving, excellent communication, and teamwork.
- Knowledge: Nebraska-specific floodplain and water resource regulations, Section 408 compliance, and NDOT design manuals.
Other:- Engineering degrees must be from an EAC/ABET-accredited program (or evaluated by NCEES as equivalent).
- Rare out of town travel may be required with infrequent overnight stays and ability to work extended hours to assure project delivery.
- Valid driver's license or the ability to provide independent authorized transportation is required.
- Regular and reliable attendance is required.
