About TJPA's Salesforce Transit Center
The "Grand Central Station of the West" The TJPA's Salesforce Transit Center will centralize the region's transportation network by conveniently connecting all points in the San Francisco Bay Area for more than 100,000 passengers per day. The TJPA has built a state-of-the-art station-the "Grand Central Station of the West"- that, after additional phases are completed, will accommodate eleven transit systems from the Bay Area and Southern California. The new TJPA's Salesforce Transit Center is making world-class public transit options accessible, seamless, safe, and efficient.
As the northern terminus for High Speed Rail in California and one of the first modern high speed rail stations to be constructed in the United States:
- The $2.2 billion project was funded through local, regional, state and federal sources.
- Four levels above ground and two levels below ground, one million square feet and 1,400 feet long. If stood upright, it would be the tallest building in San Francisco.
- Provides a Bus Bridge crossing several busy San Francisco streets to provide direct bus access from the Bay Bridge to the Transit Center reducing congestion on city streets and travel times.
- Provides two pedestrian bridges connecting office and residential buildings directly to the park with a third planned.
- Includes a Gondola providing direct access to the park for the public from Salesforce Plaza, privately-operated by Boston Properties, owner of adjacent Salesforce Tower.
- Is wrapped with a 3,000-foot-long, 44-foot-tall groundbreaking geometrical rhombus tiling pattern discovered by Sir Roger Penrose, which can extend infinitely without repeating itself.
- Will serve High Speed Rail, and Caltrain in the future.

About the Opportunity The Transbay Joint Powers Authority seeks an experienced, self-motivated, and articulate professional to serve as the Chief Engineer.
Under the direction and supervision of the TJPA's Executive Director, the Chief Engineer is responsible for executive leadership and direction for all aspects of the TJPA Engineering needs for the Center's facilities working with the full TJPA team.
In addition, the Chief Engineer will oversee the performance and services of all Capital programs, neighboring projects in close proximity to the TJPA facilities, emergency engineering projects, and all Tenant Improvement construction activity, in order to guide reporting and financial management of Capital Planning for the existing facility, and to interface with the Downtown Rail Extension (DTX) project and provide continuity to all modifications to the Center.
The position has no TJPA staff direct reports; this role overseas and holds accountable consultants and contractors.
This position is based in the TJPA's Salesforce Transit Center in San Francisco.
Essential Chief Engineer duties: - Applying technical principles and practices to architectural, civil, environmental, retail commercial, and transportation projects.
- Working with professional engineers in tasks requiring advanced engineering/architectural skills, and/or judgment.
- Performing advance-level work in the construction field and in the office following established design and construction management technical methods and procedures.
- Meeting with the public, contractors, public agencies, and other program stakeholders on engineering design and construction matters.
- Conducting field inspections of existing structures, construction sites, and projects.
- Preparing meeting minutes, correspondence, reports, contract specifications, lists of materials, cost estimates, budgets, and schedules.
- Gathering, preparing, and maintaining engineering/architectural data, construction records, and reports.
- Participating in public and project meetings.
- Presenting technical and project information in public and project meetings.
- Drafting correspondence, memos, studies, reports, logs, and other program related documents.
- Advising the Facility Director on engineering impacts of events, operations, or capital planning.
- Reviewing contractor invoices and applications for progress payments, maintain logs, update construction schedules, and gather records as necessary for the negotiation of change orders and defense against construction claims.
Responsibilities include: - General oversight.
- Financial Management & Reporting.
- Facility Operations, Lifecycle & Capital Improvement Management.
- Retail & Security Program.
The Chief Engineer's role pertaining to the retail program and the security coordination are the engineering impacts to the facility or CIP projects related to these topics. - Emergency Response Coordination.
- Any other duties as needed/assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Architecture from an accredited college or university.
- Professional Engineer's license (Civil) in CA or Registered Architectural License in CA.
- Minimum 20 years of engineering or architectural experience since graduating college.
- Understanding of both vertical and horizontal engineering & construction.
- Experience overseeing consultants.
- Background in reviewing and analyzing construction schedules and developing basic bar chart schedules.
- Skilled in reviewing and analyzing engineers' estimates.
- Advanced computer skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication.
- Budget and financial acumen.
