A day in the life of A Transportation Engineer at NTH Prepare contract plans, cost estimates, technical specifications for bridge, roadway, highway, and municipal transportation projects. Perform design and drawing preparations using MDOT accepted version of Bentley CONNECT and Public Agencies design standards. Be able to perform a variety of engineering analyses and calculations, with and without the use of engineering software (MDOT’s PQS spreadsheet, knowledge of OpenRoad and OpenBridge Designer preferred). Perform routine safety inspections of in-service bridges. Assist in performing load rating of in-service bridges. Assist in day-to-day communication with internal design team and with clients as directed by the Project Manager. Develop Technical Proposals and develop design budgets and scope of work for a variety of Transportation Projects. What you need to apply Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, emphasis in Transportation Engineering. Professional registration or ability to get within 1-year, required. 3 years of demonstrated experience in Bridge, Road, and/or Civil Engineering analysis and design. Sound knowledge and understanding of Transportation Engineering: Bridge/Civil/Roadway/Highway design concepts and basic understanding of Bentley CONNECT and other Software for DOT and LAP projects. Ability to perform bridge design engineering calculations with designated software. Ability to perform safety inspections and scoping of existing bridges. NHI 130-055 certification is a plus. Ability to perform roadway design engineering calculations with the designated software, drainage, and hydraulic design is a plus. Ability to prepare DOT format bridge/roadway plan documents. Previous experience with a consulting firm or roadway owner. Must have strong written and oral communication skills, be able to work in a team environment as well as independently, demonstrated team-oriented approach to problem-solving, and have strong interpersonal skills for contact with clients and fellow engineers/technicians. Accuracy, dependability, and strong organizational skills. Exceptional time management skills, ability to manage multiple assignments at any given time, and have ability to work in a team environment. The ability to perform field services as well as office design services is a plus. Ability to interact with existing clients to understand their needs. Ability to perform project planning, invoicing and collections, budgeting, task delegation, and management to ensure project is completed according to work plans. May be required to perform job duties in the field and office, during non-standard work hours, as necessary. Must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. May be required to enter and work within confined spaces, once appropriately trained. Must hold a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel to and conduct field work at job sites/offices in Michigan.
