MIGA is looking for a dynamic, motivated biodiversity professional with strong expertise on PS6 Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Management of Living Natural Resources across a range of sectors and regions with excellent communication, interpersonal and analytical skills to join the team. The Senior Biodiversity Specialist will support on due diligence and monitoring of projects with a focus on biodiversity risks and impacts and support on corporate biodiversity and nature activities. The Senior Biodiversity Specialist will report to the MIGS2 Sector Manager and be based in Washington DC. Roles & Responsibilities The Senior Biodiversity Specialist will be responsible for conducting due diligence and monitoring of biodiversity aspects across MIGA’s projects in line with PS 6 requirements as well as providing upstream and advisory support to MIGA Operations team and MIGA clients. The Senior Biodiversity Specialist will also be required to lead and/or support (as requested) MIGA corporate biodiversity and nature initiatives, such as implementation of the nature finance tracking methodology. Responsibilities include: Support project lead E&S specialists in the screening of prospective projects with respect to biodiversity risks. Support project E&S specialists in gathering and analyzing available information, such as clients’ project documentation, to identify gaps against PS6 as relevant to the real sector (e.g., infrastructure, energy, agribusiness, manufacturing, services, etc.). Support in the identification and development of mitigation measures for biodiversity-specific risks and impacts in alignment with the mitigation hierarchy and PS6 and development of measures to monitor implementation through plans and programs. Support the mapping of biodiversity-related supply chain risks and assist in the development of approaches to promote more sustainable practices. Provide capacity-building, training and other support to both private sector as well as government clients to better understand the value of and need to protect biodiversity and ecosystems. Oversee, coordinate and manage biodiversity consultants, including contractual and technical management. Track portfolio-wide risks with respect to biodiversity aspects. Lead/contribute to the design and delivery of biodiversity and nature related learning programs both internally and externally. Support the definition, roll-out and implementation of MIGA’s nature and sustainability business strategy. Keep abreast of the evolution of the nature finance among the World Bank Group (WBG) and other Development Finance Institutions, providing MIGA representatives with regular updates. Participate and represent MIGA in WBG and Multi-lateral Development Bank working groups regarding nature and biodiversity. Review relevant documentation regarding WBG nature finance activities and provide inputs as required. Arrange learning material and lead training on nature finance for MIGA staff. Provide input into the development and review of relevant policy, procedures and guidance notes. Represent MIGA at biodiversity-related conferences, technical meetings, industry events and environmental fora. Support nature finance origination and business development in liaison with MIGA’s operation teams. Advise clients on measures required to enhance the sustainability of their operations in line with the nature finance methodology and the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Collaborate with the rest of MIGA’s Environmental, Social and Climate teams and coordinate closely with MIGA’s Departments on assigned projects and corporate tasks. Support discussions with Compliance Advisor Ombudsman (CAO) and Independent Evaluation Group (IEG), as requested. Selection Criteria Advanced degree (Masters required) in natural sciences, biodiversity conservation or related field (such as ecology; biology; marine biology; wildlife management). At least 8 years’ work experience in emerging markets and in environmental and social risk management with a focus on biodiversity management across the private and/or the public sector. Significant working experience in the application of MIGA/IFC’s PS6 and Guidance Note (GN) 6. Experience of application of PS6 in MIGA/IFC-financed projects is preferred. Experience of other aspects of MIGA/IFC’s Sustainability Framework including PS 1-5, 7 and 8, related Guidance Notes and EHS Guidelines is advantageous. Experience in developing, implementing and/or evaluating biodiversity plans including biodiversity management plan, biodiversity monitoring and evaluation program, critical habitat assessment, offset management plan is an advantage. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, strong analytical skills, ability to think strategically, analyze and synthesize diverse biodiversity related data and information. Experience in the energy, infrastructure, forestry, and agribusiness sectors and in electricity transmission and distribution would be advantageous. Proficiency in English essential, knowledge of other languages will be advantageous. Strong writing and oral presentation skills. Good interpersonal and cross-cultural skills. Willing and able to work effectively within a large, complex organization. Willing and able to travel frequently, sometimes to remote field locations with limited amenities. A skilled multi-tasker with willingness to take on any level of task. Strong organizational skills with ability to prioritize, deal with frequent unexpected changes, and manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines. A good team player with strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural team, work effectively in and influence a team, and network effectively across boundaries. Familiarity with MIGA/IFC/World Bank operations, procedures, and culture will be advantageous. Ability to work well with a range of partners, including project-affected people, government officials, international organizations, development agencies, scientific and technical bodies, NGO’s / civil society, as well as project investors and their staff.
