MISSION: WAVE Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. WAVE Foundation, in partnership with Newport Aquarium, is on a mission to inspire and foster environmental stewards of aquatic life through education, conservation, and volunteerism. WAVE provides unique education curriculum and experiences for students of all ages; supports and provides leadership in local, national and global conservation efforts; and has a vibrant volunteer program with over 300 dedicated volunteers. The Volunteer Manager and all employees working on behalf of WAVE Foundation access all the perks and benefits of employees of Herschend Enterprises and Newport Aquarium. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Monitor the day-to-day activities of volunteers and interns to ensure quality experiences. Ensure that volunteer files are securely stored and privacy/confidentiality is maintained. Maintain appropriate documentation necessary to assure proper implementation of Volunteer & Intern Services. Oversee the implementation of the human resources policies, procedures and practices including the development of position descriptions, on-job training and evaluations for all volunteers. Recruit, interview, select and onboard volunteers and interns that have the right technical and personal abilities to help further WAVE Foundation's mission. Coach and mentor volunteers and interns as appropriate to improve performance. Establish good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with community groups, unpaid staff, and other organizations to help achieve the goals of WAVE Foundation. Work with other WAVE and aquarium departments to assist in volunteer & intern staffing schedules and needs. Train staff to work effectively and cooperatively with volunteers. Ensure that volunteers & interns are given appropriate training to be successful in their positions and records of volunteer hours are maintained according to established procedures. Ensure that volunteers & interns receive the appropriate level of supervision and recognition. Assist with conflict resolution among clients, staff and volunteers according to established procedures. Develop, manage and monitor the departmental budget and related expenditures. Communicate and maintain working relationships with guests, staff, supervisors, other departments, suppliers, professional associations and colleagues in related industries. Maintain awareness of all volunteer/development activities and programs to effectively promote WAVE Foundation and Aquarium. Work with WAVE Staff to develop, plan and implement fundraising events. Other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of three years of experience in the field of volunteer services. Knowledge of zoo and aquarium industry, experience in related field a plus. Experience in training and onboarding volunteers or staff. A passion for people, animals, and conservation. Supervisory experience required. Great organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills required. A valid driver's license with a good driving record, and ability to travel as needed. Willingness to be trained in animal handling. Animals include snakes, lizards, turtles, stingrays, sharks, tide pool animals, and penguins. Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Proficiency in M365, GSuite, and database, and ability to master new software quickly. Better Impact experience a plus. PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Successful completion of pre-employment background and DMV checks. No history of allergy related to animals or plants, which might interfere with ability to work. Immunocompetence (possible exposure to infections and parasitic disease).
