Performs routine protective service work in fire suppression, hazardous materials, and emergency medical rescue, often under emergency conditions and frequently involving personal hazard. Work is performed under immediate supervision. Responsibilities Suits-out in personal protective equipment, boards fire apparatus, and responds to emergency calls. Loads, unloads, carries, and connects fire hoses of various sizes; advances and operates to control and extinguish fires. Removes, carries, positions, and climbs ladders of various lengths and performs firefighting and rescue operations. Provides ventilation openings in hazardous locations and/or positions using manual or mechanical means. Forces entry into inaccessible locations and extrication from entrapment using manual or mechanical means. Uses self-contained breathing apparatus and enters hazardous and/or toxic atmospheres. Searches hazardous locations for persons trapped or disabled and removes to safety. Performs EMT-B level (Emergency Medical Technician) functions. Performs cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Uses ropes to hoist, lower and secure persons and/or equipment using various knots. Performs property conservation measures during fires and/or environmental emergencies. Identifies tool location and proper use on assigned apparatus. Proper maintenance of tools assigned to apparatus. Knowledge of components, cleaning, and basic air management. Knowledge of fire behavior. Proper selection and uses of portable extinguishers. Assist with public education and fire prevention classes. Performs daily cleaning and care of the fire stations and grounds. Installs and maintains smoke detectors in the community. Performs other related and non-related activities within the scope of firefighter's knowledge, skills, and abilities. Ability to climb and descend ladders of various heights, navigate, or walk on various shaped roofs. Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City safety standards and policies. Minimum Requirements Formal Education Graduation with High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Successful completion of the Recruit Academy. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships through written or oral communications. Understanding of local, state, and federal regulations and OSHA requirements. Certifications Must have or be able to obtain North Carolina or National Registry EMT certification within one year from date of employment. Must have valid appropriate North Carolina Driver’s License. Preferred Qualifications English and Spanish Language skills. Physical Requirements Must meet medical and physical requirements of NFPA 1582. Hearing/Speaking - Expressing and/or receiving information by means of spoken word are both necessary to converse with internal and external customers including co-workers, citizens and applicants. Visual Abilities – the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position: Acuity, far – clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Both eyes 20/22 – R 20/25 – L 20/25 corrected. Acuity, near – clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Both eyes 20/40 corrected. Must be able to see work-related business documents close at hand. Depth perception – Three-dimensional vision and the ability to judge distance and space relationships. Field of Vision – the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are focused on one point. Must be able to see a wide span of area. Accommodation – Must be able to adjust the eye lens to bring an object into sharp focus. Color vision – ability to identify and distinguish colors. Mental Activity/Requirements Reasoning: Ability to apply principles of logical thinking combined with knowledge of principles and practices of public personnel and employment laws to work tasks and handle practical situations, comprehend, and respond to a variety of situations in a timely fashion and exercise good judgment. Mathematics Ability: Using arithmetic: Ability to count, add, subtract, multiply, divide and ability to utilize algebraic equations to properly figure hydraulic functions such as PSI, Nozzle Pressure, Friction Loss, etc. Language Ability The ability to speak, read and write the English Language are required for this position. Environmental Conditions The Firefighter is subject to working inside or outdoors. Position is subjected to various weather conditions, (sleet, snow, ice, rain, wind, extremely hot or cold) whenever emergencies occur or performing regular duties. Hazards The Firefighter may be exposed to trash, debris, numerous chemicals, smoke, combustible and flammable materials, various gases, body fluids or other hazards.
