Part-Time/On Call Building Inspector Compensation – $28.00-$44.00 Hourly DOE/DOQ Job Summary: Performs a variety of technical inspection work to enforce compliance with International Code Council (ICC) building codes, regulations, and ordinances as adopted and amended by jurisdictions. Possesses the knowledge and/or the ability to learn and keep abreast of existing, revised, and new state and local codes and ordinances and professional developments within the field. In addition, the individual will understand and have the ability to implement building related codes and ordinances enforced by jurisdictions, including the International Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, Fuel Gas and Energy Conservation codes, as adopted and amended by jurisdictions. Job Duties: – Conduct residential and commercial inspections and support duties with a high level of competence. – Inspect industrial, commercial, and residential buildings during various stages of construction and/or remodeling to ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations; make determinations regarding approval or disapproval of work being conducted. – Respond to emergency call situations to inspect buildings after fire or other catastrophic events; evaluate structural stability; determine if building is habitable and formulate reports of findings. – Perform inspection activities with other jurisdictional departments and outside agencies as required. – Confer with architects, contractors, builders, and the public in the field; explain and interpret requirements, procedures, and restrictions; perform field inspections on projects for which permits have been issued. – Explain laws, ordinances, and code provisions to contractors, property owners, and the public and provide information to assist in correcting deficiencies in construction. – Resolve and respond to complex and sensitive customer service issues – Document inspection activities performed regarding daily inspections in software. – Review plans in the field to determine conformity to building and zoning codes. – Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required. Qualifications: – Knowledge of and ability to enforce building related codes and ordinances adopted by jurisdictions, including the International Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, Fuel Gas and Energy Conservation codes and amendments. – Knowledge of and the ability to learn and keep abreast of existing, revised, and new state and local codes and ordinances and professional developments within the field. – The ability to research codes and ordinances as assigned and trends within the field. – Learn and demonstrate thorough knowledge of jurisdiction code requirements and related policies. – Read and interpret complex building plans, specifications, and building codes. – Ability to enforce necessary regulations with firmness and tact, always maintaining excellent customer service. – Take proper safety precautions, anticipate unsafe circumstances, and act accordingly to prevent accidents. Use all the required safety equipment. Computer Skills: – Learn the operation of computer and jurisdiction-supported software, to include MS Office Suite, Community Core, Adobe, and other software, including the use of iPads for field inspections. – Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. – Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Education and Training: – High school diploma or GED equivalent. – Completion of college coursework in Building Technology, Construction Management, Architecture, or Engineering from an accredited college, university, or technical school is preferred. – A minimum of three (3) years of construction related job experience as an inspector, contractor, engineer, architect, or as a superintendent, foreman, or mechanic in charge of construction; OR minimum of one (1) year of inspection experience required. Licensure or Certificate: – Possession of a valid Colorado Driver’s License, class “R”, with a safe driving record is required. – Possession of a minimum of two (2) of the following certifications or licenses at all times throughout employment. Individuals who possess a current Colorado Journeyman or Master license in Plumbing or Electrical only need to possess one (1) ICC certification to meet the requirements: State of Colorado Master or Journeyman Electrician License State of Colorado Master or Journeyman Plumber License ICC Residential or Commercial Building Inspector ICC Residential or Commercial Plumbing Inspector ICC Residential or Commercial Mechanical Inspector Physical Requirements: Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment: – Ability to withstand exposure to confining spaces, noise, outdoor weather conditions, electrical hazards, dust, and mechanical hazards as these conditions occur on the job. – The individual in this position must have the ability to climb ladders to inspect roofs. – The individual must have the ability to carry up to 50 lbs.
