High Voltage Electrical Project Engineer Hecate Energy is seeking a mid-career High Voltage Project Engineer to facilitate the engineering and technical equipment evaluation for solar and storage projects, substations, and switchyards for Hecate Energy’s 50 GW development project pipeline. The specific responsibilities and compensation package for this position will be commensurate with experience. This position will be based in Chicago, IL and report to the Director of EPC. Responsibilities Create internal conceptual and preliminary layouts and general assembly drawings of substations, transmission lines, and switchyards up to 500kV for solar and storage projects for purposes including interconnection, permitting, project sales, and construction preparation. Understand applicable codes, design standards, and technical requirements for substations, switchyards, and transmission lines and ensure they are met throughout the engineering, procurement, and construction process. Develop and maintain Specifications & Scopes of Work for 3rd Party 10% through Issued For Construction (IFC) drawings and studies for substations and switchyards. Manage consultants and review deliverables for the same. Ensure high voltage designs comply with requirements from utilities and regulators for the interconnection process. Lead solar and storage project value-engineering efforts related to high voltage equipment selection, design optimization, and procurement efforts. Support technical procurement of HV equipment such as breakers, switchgear, and transformers, including evaluation of equipment, managing relationships with vendors, and preparing specification packages. Initiate and lead internal process improvement initiatives for HV electrical engineering design processes, and support solar and storage process improvement activities across technical and non-technical disciplines. Support internal solar and storage project designs, layouts, and production models using tools such as AutoCAD, PVcase, PVsyst, NREL SAM, and GIS. Support the Project Development team with technical aspects of project sale proposals and permitting efforts. Review and consolidate information and insights across disciplines into a financially optimized cohesive project design and execution strategy. Understand applicable codes, design standards, and technical requirements for utility scale design and ensure they are met throughout the engineering, procurement, and construction process. This position will include travel to project sites and other locations to support site evaluation and construction efforts. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree or greater in Power Systems Electrical Engineering or foreign equivalent. 2-5 years of utility-scale substation and switchyard electrical engineering experience with a focus on creating or reviewing electrical engineering designs and evaluating HV electrical equipment for solar and storage projects. Experience reviewing or carrying out detailed Protection & Control and Physical designs for Substations, including one-lines, three lines, DC/ AC Schematics, Wiring Drawings, SCADA communication specifications, Layout Drawings. Experience leading relationships with external partners, such as equipment vendors, technical consultants, and external engineering firms. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Passion for renewable energy. Comfort bringing sense to ambiguity and driving forward one’s technical initiatives. Proficiency with Microstation, PowerWorld, ETAP, CYMCAP, QGIS, AutoCAD, Excel, Python, R, and VBA a plus. Ability to travel for site visits or meetings as needed (up to 25%).
