Wärtsilä’s Energy Business is looking for an Electrical Engineer for the Energy Storage & Optimization business. The role will be part of the hardware engineering team. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter that can work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team. The candidate should thrive in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment while the industry and company go through substantial growth. Location(s) for this position is Wärtsilä’s office in Herndon, Virginia. Responsibilities: Validate and test Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), including establishing test plan, designing test setup, defining and sizing equipment needed such as inverters, circuit breakers, cables, fuses, surge arrestors, developing control and protection scheme, and calculating auxiliary load needed. Design electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, and application/logic functional block diagrams in AutoCAD Electrical or other equivalent electrical drawing programs. Develop cable schedules for AC and DC application, including ampacity calculation, and cable/termination selection. Evaluate product and system designs and configurations for compliance to relevant industry standards. Develop test plans for system or component level testing and execute them in lab environment to verify compliance with design requirements. Execute product certification testing at in-house facility or external testing facility. Develop testing documentation such as test plan, test schedule, schematic, bill of materials, test procedure, and test report. Organize the lab equipment and manage lab resources. Collaborate in a team environment and take charge of opportunities to develop optimal solutions for the product development programs. Minimum Experience and Educational Requirements: 3 years of electrical engineering experience focusing on testing electrical systems preferably power systems and/or Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Ability to design electrical circuits for up to 1000 Vac and 1500 Vdc ensuring compliance to common design standards. Able to review product or test equipment specification, interconnection requirements and selecting proper cabling. Knowledge of lab instruments such as multimeters, power supplies, DAQ, oscilloscopes etc. Experience with working in lab environment. Experience with working in a laboratory testing environment and thorough understanding of test lab safety. Experience with Siemens and B&R automation PLC is a plus. Experience with designing and testing of battery and energy storage systems is a plus. Working knowledge of industrial control philosophies and communication protocols. Experience with AutoCAD Electrical or other equivalent electrical drawing programs. Problem solving and innovative mindset. Maintain positive working relationships with customers, peers, subordinates, and vendors in a fast-paced environment. Team player attitude. Willing to travel 20% of the time.
