The JLL Horticulturist will perform general horticulture duties within The Spheres and/or Redmond Greenhouse. Reports to the JLL Horticulturist III. Primary Duties / Essential Job Functions As a member of the Global Real Estate & Facilities (GREF) team this position will be responsible for managing the day-to-day horticultural operations of The Spheres and/or Redmond Greenhouse and other horticultural aspects of Amazon’s Seattle-based Corporate Headquarters. This includes maintenance of interior plant installations and exterior landscape. The successful candidate is a self-starter who must be comfortable operating on both strategic and tactical levels, simultaneously acting as an internal ambassador, educator, and implementer. The optimal candidate is an experienced and vibrant professional who excels within an entrepreneurial culture – providing vision, leadership, and communication – but not afraid to dive into details. Having passion and in-depth knowledge of the horticultural world is critical. This individual also has experience in maintaining high quality interior and exterior plant displays. Essential Functions: Perform general horticulture maintenance within the Spheres and/or in the Amazon Support Greenhouse facilities, including watering, planting, weeding, irrigation, pest control, and pruning, under direction of the supervisors Horticulturist and/or Amazon staff. Ability to take initiative and work independently on assigned projects, research, or tasks. Partner with Amazon staff on horticulture projects such as exhibit design, terrariums, living walls, etc. Partner with Amazon staff on managing the cultivation and transfer of plant material to and from The Spheres and other locations via motor vehicle. Partner with Amazon staff on plant procurement and acquisitions. Manage horticulture projects at direction of Amazon staff. Discourse with Amazon employees, partners, and the public to educate them about plants, biophilia, conservation, and other horticulture-related topics. Assists with training of Horticulture team staff. Produces well-written reports on a regular cadence. Performs regular horticulture-focused tours of the facility for guests. Assisting team by identifying deficits and notifying management to correct issues. Identification and reporting of safety issues. Willingness to attain Washington State Pesticide Applicator license upon employment and BMU/lift certification to work at height on living walls. Other Functions: Assists with plant procurement and acquisitions in accordance with the Amazon plant collection policy. Attends trainings and professional development opportunities as directed by supervisors. Carry out other duties as assigned by supervisors. Experience / Skills Essential Physical Capabilities: Meet highest attendance and punctuality requirements. Detect emergency alarms - auditory and/or visual. Valid Driver’s license. Comfortable working at heights of over 30 ft. Ability to work under different climatic conditions (e.g., high heat and humidity) and to lift up to 50 lbs. Essential Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of tropical and temperate plants. Lead by example and be willing and able to mentor others. Attention to detail and ability to uphold highest aesthetic and horticultural standards. Firm grasp on plant nutrition, managing water quality, and greenhouse climate control systems and the ability to measure, monitor, and manipulate systems and interpret diagnostic reports. Knowledge of science-based horticultural practices including integrated pest management (IPM). Ability to recognize pest and disease issues in the landscape. Ability and interest in multi-tasking and working independently with a team. Interact with employees, visitors and contractors with professionalism and diplomacy. Apply science-based thinking and problem solving and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to operate a personal computer, software as appropriate for project and all other office equipment. Advanced competence with a variety of software including MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, and other requested software programs. Interpret instructions in written, oral, and diagrammatic or schedule form. Possess initiative to assume additional responsibilities. Set priorities and meet deadlines. Communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats. Possess excellent grammatical and proofreading abilities. Experience: Conservatory projects experience. Propagation project experience. Integrated Pest Management experience. Experience with designing, implementing and managing horticultural projects and displays. Experience managing service vendors. Education: Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, horticulture, or greenhouse-related area of study preferred. Minimum 5 years of experience in horticulture, living architecture, or greenhouse plant production. Estimated total compensation for this position: 58,200.00 – 84,400.00 USD per year.
