Job Details DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Research, Data Analysis and Management (35%) The position requires the individual to perform data analysis on experimental results, utilizing statistical and bioinformatics tools to interpret complex datasets. This includes analyzing genetic, physiological, and environmental data to uncover patterns and relationships that inform research questions. The individual must be proficient in data visualization techniques to support findings and will work closely with other team members to validate and interpret results within the context of ongoing research. Responsibilities in data management include organizing and maintaining large datasets generated from research activities. This involves ensuring data accuracy, implementing data storage solutions, and managing data access in compliance with institutional guidelines. The individual will also be responsible for documenting metadata and ensuring data integrity to support reproducibility and transparency in research. Scientific Writing and Documentation (30%) The primary responsibility of this role involves extensive writing tasks, which include drafting, revising, and finalizing scientific manuscripts, grant proposals, and technical reports. The role requires translating complex research findings into accessible language for diverse audiences, from academic journals to funding agencies. The individual will document experimental methods, data analyses, and results in clear, structured formats to support publication efforts and disseminate findings effectively. This may also include the development of review articles and other scholarly contributions to advance knowledge in the field. Communication Strategy and Planning (25%) This responsibility focuses on coordinating research activities, collaborating with team members, and developing strategic research plans to meet project goals. The role involves communicating regularly with collaborators, attending project meetings, and providing updates on project milestones. Additionally, the individual will contribute to the design of research studies, set project objectives, and help align team efforts to ensure progress toward shared goals. Effective communication skills are essential for maintaining clear and consistent exchanges with both internal and external stakeholders. Presentation of Research (10%) This aspect of the role involves preparing and delivering presentations of research findings to both scientific and public audiences. The individual will create visually engaging and informative presentations for conferences, workshops, and seminars, contributing to the visibility and impact of the research program. Effective communication skills are required to convey complex scientific concepts in ways that resonate with diverse audiences, furthering public understanding of the research. This structure ensures that the individual balances rigorous scientific writing and research activities with effective communication and strategic project management, contributing to the advancement and dissemination of impactful research in marine biology and environmental resilience. Requirements MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology and four years of experience in experimental studies on coral early life stages, interdisciplinary collaboration, and publishing; OR Equivalent combination of education/experience. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Additional Knowledge • Marine Biology and Coral Ecology: In-depth understanding of marine ecosystems, coral physiology, and symbiosis mechanisms, with a focus on resilience to climate stressors. • Advanced Analytical Techniques: Expertise in metabolomics, stable isotope tracing, and multi-omics approaches to study physiological and genetic adaptation. • Data Analysis and Bioinformatics: Strong knowledge of statistical and bioinformatics methods relevant to analyzing complex ecological and genetic data. • Scientific Writing: Comprehensive understanding of scientific writing conventions, peer-reviewed publishing processes, and grant proposal structures. Additional Skills • Scientific Communication: Ability to effectively communicate complex scientific concepts in written and oral formats, tailored to both scientific and public audiences. • Data Analysis Software: Proficiency in R, Python, or other programming languages for data processing, statistical analysis, and data visualization. • Project Coordination: Skills in planning, coordinating, and executing research projects, including managing timelines, resources, and collaborative efforts. • Technical Writing: High-level skills in drafting manuscripts, reports, and grant applications, with the ability to synthesize data and insights clearly and concisely. • Data Management: Strong organizational skills for handling and maintaining large datasets, with attention to detail in data integrity and reproducibility practices. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Desirable Knowledge • Climate Change and Environmental Stressors: Advanced understanding of how climate change impacts marine ecosystems, particularly regarding thermal tolerance, acidification, and related stressors. • Conservation Biology and Restoration Practices: Knowledge of conservation strategies, such as coral assisted evolution and habitat restoration, to support ecosystem resilience. • Machine Learning and Advanced Statistical Methods: Familiarity with machine learning techniques or advanced statistical methods applicable to ecological and physiological data analysis. Desirable Skills • Grant Writing: Proven success in securing major grants and fellowships, demonstrating strong grant writing abilities that enhance research funding opportunities. • Public Engagement and Outreach: Skilled in public outreach and science communication to foster community involvement and awareness of marine conservation efforts. • Mentorship and Leadership: Experience mentoring students or junior researchers, with the ability to lead small research teams effectively. • High-Throughput Data Processing: Competence in processing and analyzing large datasets, potentially using cloud computing resources or high-performance computing clusters.
