Staff Geologist Requisition Number: 2023-1050-31 S&ME is looking for a motivated and passionate mid-level Staff Geologist to join our Environmental team in Raleigh, North Carolina . This position offers the opportunity to learn from and grow with an established team and to address complex environmental challenges. Join us at S&ME As a mid-level Staff Geologist , you will support environmental projects in central and eastern North Carolina. This role includes both field and office work on site characterization and geologic investigations, addressing various contaminants for government and commercial clients. You will collaborate with Professional Geologists, Engineers, and environmental scientists to collect, review, and evaluate geologic data, and prepare reports. Independent judgment is crucial for managing a diverse workload. Our geologists have experience at contaminated sites, leading field programs, and preparing planning documents and reports. Your Day-to-Day: Field Data Collection and Characterization: Work at project sites with construction equipment, drilling rigs, and contamination. Use GPS, PID, CGI, and data loggers to collect environmental data. Sample surface water, groundwater, soil, sediment, soil vapor, and indoor air. Engage in Phase I and II ESA site assessments. Maintain detailed field notes and documentation. Project Management: Oversee complex field tasks like site investigations, drilling, and sample collection. Coordinate project planning with labs, drillers, and vendors. Communicate effectively with staff, management, clients, regulators, and on-site personnel, both verbally and in writing. Report and Proposal Preparation: Compile and evaluate geologic, hydrogeologic, and environmental data. Prepare detailed lithologic cross sections and reports. Assist with technical writing by reviewing and analyzing data from labs, field reports, maps, drawings, and tests. Under a licensed professional's direction, serve as the primary author for reports and develop scope and fee proposals for small to medium projects. What You Bring: A Bachelor's in Geology, Engineering, or related field 2 years of related Geology experience Geologist in Training (GIT) certification, or on track to obtain OSHA 1910.120 40-Hour HAZWOPER Training, a plus Analytical thinking to solve problems, with expertise in environmental sampling, testing methods, and regulatory requirements (EPA, NCDEQ) Experience with field equipment (groundwater pumps, field meters) Knowledge and ability to use ArcView and AutoCAD, a plus Working Conditions and Physical Demands: You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment such as: Working outdoors in varying weather conditions Traveling out-of-town (typically overnight) for assignments as necessary Working outside of normal business hours when necessary We Are S&ME: At S&ME, we've spent over 50 years providing innovative solutions in geotechnical, civil, environmental, and construction materials disciplines.
