We value the opportunity to consider those who believe they have the necessary skills and ambition to succeed at NREL.Job DescriptionWe are hiring a Group Manager in our Strategic Energy Security to provide vision, leadership, technical guidance, and stewardship of people and capabilities for the new Strategic Energy Security Group in NREL's Energy Security and Resilience Center, within NREL's Energy Security, Resilience, and Integration Directorate. The research focus of the group includes fundamentals of energy security, supply chains of emerging technologies, risks to - and affordability of - energy systems, adaptation, acceptance, market structures, and economics of energy systems. The research portfolio includes principles, tools, techniques, and methodologies to assess and mitigate disruptions from all sources: cyber and physical attacks, extreme weather and other natural disasters, and geopolitical events. The incumbent will develop the strategic direction of the group in coordination with the ESR Center Director.
Responsibilities include:
- Guide research and development in foundational and applied science for advancement of energy security. This work should inform analysis and approaches to validation utilizing a broad range of analysis, modeling, and emulation capabilities.
- Develop and enhance technical capabilities relevant to advancing energy security while delivering world-class research, development, and evaluation results.
- Strategic partnering with industry, academia, and other national labs is a high priority.
- Understand interlinked security and resilience needs of clients including U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and other federal agencies, as well as key industry partners.
- Identify and lead response to funding opportunities from DOE and other sources.
- Manage group staff, including hiring, mentoring, motivating, and evaluating performance.
- Ensure staff members understand and are compliant with NREL policies and procedures, creating a supportive work environment that encourages innovation and entrepreneurships and that enables staff to reach their full potential.
- Manage the implementation of equal employment opportunity, affirmative action, and sexual harassment programs, policies and procedures within the center.
- Represent NREL's research in energy security at technical, business, and stakeholder events.
Basic QualificationsGroup Manager III:
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Economics, Public Policy and/or another technical discipline related to energy system resilience and 14 years related work experience; Or, Master's Degree in Engineering, Economics, Public Policy and/or another technical discipline related to energy system resilience and 12 years related work experience; Or, PhD in Engineering, Economics, Public Policy and/or another technical discipline related to energy system resilience and 9 years related work experience.
Group Manager II:
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Economics, Public Policy and/or another technical discipline related to energy system resilience and 9 years related work experience; Or, Master's Degree in Engineering, Economics, Public Policy and/or another technical discipline related to energy system resilience and 7 years related work experience; Or, PhD in Engineering, Economics, Public Policy and/or another technical discipline related to energy system resilience and 4 years related work experience.
* Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.Additional Required Qualifications- Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE (L or Q) security clearance and SCI access. SCI access may require a polygraph examination. Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE O 472.2A for additional information.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)Job Profile: Group Manager III / Annual Salary Range: $137,600 - $247,700
Job Profile: Group Manager II / Annual Salary Range: $114,500 - $206,100
NREL takes into consideration a candidate's education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
