Predator Biologist to join our team in
Lompoc, CA. Job Summary: The ManTech Natural Resources Lompoc Team is seeking a Predator Biologist for an immediate, full-time exempt position to support our predator management program in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties, California. This position will be based out of our Lompoc, CA office, though we may consider a hybrid position (ability to work from home when appropriate) for the right candidate; however, the candidate will need to access field sites throughout San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties. Work vehicles are provided for travel to work sites. It is expected that the successful applicant will work 30% in the office and 70% in the field depending on the season.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:- Monitor and remove confirmed and potential avian and mammalian predators to threatened and endangered species
- Minimize predation of threatened species; including trapping, relocation, hazing and hunting
- Management of both native and non-native predator populations in an effort to minimize predation pressure
- Use an adaptive management approach which can involve exploring innovative predator management techniques to improve species survival
- Safely use firearms for dispatch; mammal trapping; investigating predation events to determine the predator(s) responsible to help guide management of predators; deployment and maintenance of trail cameras; coordination with other biological monitors and project staff; attending meetings as necessary to provide updates on predator control activities; data entry; and assisting with report writing.
Minimum Qualifications:- B.S. degree or higher in Ecology, Wildlife Biology, Environmental Science, or related field
- 4+ years of professional wildlife biology experience with a focus on predator management; personal hunting experience may substitute for professional experience
- Proficiency with firearms demonstrated through a successful skills assessment
- Ability to quickly identify avian and mammalian species by sight and through binoculars, and at night through thermal or night imaging equipment
Preferred/Desired:- CA Hunter's Education License
- CA Trapping License for furbearing or nongame mammals
- Federal 10(a)(1)(a) permits for CA wildlife species
Security Clearance Requirements:Physical Requirements:- Ability to walk, crouch, and move about outdoors; may encounter typical field hazards such as poison oak, ticks, and other nuisance species
- Lift and haul weight occasionally up to 50 lbs at a time
- Hike rugged, uneven terrain often at night
- Operate 4WD and other all terrain vehicles occasionally trailering heavy loads
- Navigate using GPS in remote settings
- Office work entails stationary sitting positions up to 50% time. Operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine and computer printer
The projected compensation range for this position is $66,500.00-$110,800.00. There are differentiating factors that can impact a final salary/hourly rate, including, but not limited to, Contract Wage Determination, relevant work experience, skills and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location (For Remote Opportunities), education and certifications as well as Federal Government Contract Labor categories.
