Duties

Conducts research using genomics, and molecular approaches to improve pathogen recovery and specificity and decrease time to detection using culture techniques.
Use metagenomic methods to identify culture biases and microbial dynamics that impede the culture-based detection of pathogens of interest.
Design and evaluate metagenomics (bioinformatic) pipelines and customization of those pipelines based on the needs of research findings.
Develop and apply new metagenomic techniques and original methods of attack to the solution for culture independent methods, presenting unprecedented and/or novel aspects.

Qualifications

The position of Research Biologist falls under the 0401 occupational series. To qualify for this position at grade GS-14, you must meet all requirements by 11:59 pm EST on 10/21/2024.

Basic Requirements

1.Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR

2.Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Minimum Qualifications:

Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. The specialized experience must demonstrate one year of full-time work experience , or the equivalent if part-time (for example, an employee working 20 hours per week for a 12-month period should be credited with 6 months of experience.) Experience may have been obtained in either the federal service or its equivalent with state or local government, the private sector, or nongovernmental organizations.

GS-14: You must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13, in the Federal service, which includes:

1. Analyzing genomic data from foods or environmental samples to determine the presence of foodborne pathogens; AND

2. Planning, executing, or collaborating in experimental research projects that use metagenomic and bioinformatic techniques to guide food safety.

HHS has a critical preparedness and response mission: HHS protects the American people from health threats, researches emerging diseases, and mobilizes public health programs with domestic and international partners. In support of this mission, HHS offers its employees the opportunity to volunteer to become Federal Civilian Detailees and contribute their unique skills through voluntary temporary assignments to humanitarian emergencies or Departmental priorities countering new and emerging health, safety, and security threats.

Federal agencies may request information regarding the vaccination status of selected applicants for the purposes of implementing other workplace safety protocols, such as protocols related to masking, physical distancing, testing, travel, and quarantine.
