Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Aquatic Resource Education Program in the Chesapeake and Coastal Service Unit, is currently accepting applications for a Seasonal Contractual Education Specialist. This position will service the Center for Conservation, Education and Stewardship through programmatic support of the Aquatic Resource Education Program (ARE). Specifically working on modernizing, upgrading and bolstering the current ARE offerings. The predominant ARE offering the incumbent will be responsible for is the organisms in the classroom projects. These projects involve aquarium raised organisms, instruction manuals, training workshops, curation of educational resources, supply inventory and restock, gear and supply distribution, classroom and teacher support. The secondary ARE offering the incumbent will be assisting with is the Angler Education projects. The main project focus being State Tackle Loaner. Responsibilities for this will include supply inventory and restock, gear and supply distribution, enlisting new sites, and advertising for awareness/access.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Three years of administrative staff or professional work.

Note: Candidates may substitute the completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university for one year of the required experience. Transcripts must be uploaded with application or emailed to HRS analyst by announcement deadline to receive credit for this substitution.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience and knowledge managing aquariums with live organisms.
Experience with recreational and/or commercial crabbing and/or fishing.
Experience with recreational boating, either motorized or non-motorized.
Two to three years of experience in parks, recreation, outdoor education, and/or environmental science.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle, UTV or golf cart. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland and five points or fewer on their current driving record.

For education obtained outside the U.S., a copy of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service must be provided prior to hire.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
