Position Duties

Duration of Assignment:
Approximately 12 weeks starting February 2025.

Salary Information:
The Environmental Services Department is currently seeking to fill one (1) part-time unbenefited Undergraduate/Graduate Student Intern in the Integrated Waste Management Division.

Salary ranges for this classification are:

Undergraduate Student Intern: $15.17 - $21.66 per hour (unbenefited)
Graduate Student Intern: $19.62 - 28.98 per hour (unbenefited)

These salary ranges include an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates' qualifications and experience.

About the Integrated Waste Management (IWM) Division:
ESD's Integrated Waste Management (IWM) Division leads one of the largest and most advanced solid waste management systems in the United States through creativity and innovation. Division staff collaborate with other City departments and establish strong partnerships with private companies, other government agencies, nonprofits, and the community on a variety of key efforts. About the Recycling Contamination Monitoring Internship:
The Recycling Contamination Monitoring intern will provide project support to the Integrated Waste Management Division. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Project Assistance:

Residential Contamination and Recycling Tagging (CART) project support
- Data quality checks
- Generating weekly field maps
- Data analysis and review using Microsoft Office Suite tools, and ArcGIS platform.
- Assist with creating data dashboards.
- Conduct recycling cart lid-flips in the field and support the CART field supervisor as needed.

Assist the Residential and Commercial Programs with projects as they arise.Assist with grants, including help with tracking, organizing, and documenting related activities.Assist with social media outreach documentation to support reporting requirements.Research and Data Management:

Conduct online research and assist in compiling relevant information for ongoing projects.
Input and track data in spreadsheets for various programs, including waste management and pilot projects.
Assist in data entry, GIS mapping, and data quality control for City projects, such as bike lanes and recycling programs.

Administrative Support, as needed:

Handle mailings, phone coverage, and monitoring of email inboxes and hotlines.
Perform basic data entry, data comparison, and update contact lists.
Assist with sorting, filing, and organizing non-urgent projects.
Support in creating simple documents, flyers, and other materials as needed.

Meetings and Collaboration:

Attend relevant meetings and provide assistance as needed for division projects.
Collaborate with team members on special projects, providing research and organizational support.

Minimum Qualifications

Undergraduate Student Intern: Current enrollment in an accredited college or university in an undergraduate program.

Graduate Student Intern: Completion of a bachelor's degree and current enrollment in a master's degree program from an accredited college or university.

Experience: None. Enrollment in programs with an environmental, sustainability, or geography focus are preferred.

Licenses & Certificates: Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing the operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California may be required for some positions.

Part-time positions(less than 40 hours per week) are required to participate in the City's PTC 457 Deferred Compensation Plan per Federal regulations. Employees are required to contribute 3.75% of gross earning and the City contributes a matching amount of 3.75%. The funds contributed by the City are 100% vested upon initial deferral and will be held in in a stability of principal investment. This plan is in lieu of social security and does not include any healthcare benefits or contributions.
