Duties

You will serve as a nuclear engineer on the staff of the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) research reactor facility.
You will provide subordinates with direction, scientific knowledge, and training concerning reactor operations
and neutron interactions with matter.
You will perform and direct nuclear operations including reactor startup, k-excess evaluations, calibrations of nuclear safety systems, instrumentation systems, and radiation detection systems.
You will perform and/or review design changes to nuclear and other reactor systems, prepares analyses and writes supporting documentation for appropriate approval of modifications.
You will perform neutronic and thermohydraulic calculations and/or computer simulations in support of the TRIGA reactor safety analysis report and support in new or existing experiments.
You will provide support for dosimetry of experiments in the reactor and other department radiation facilities.

You will be required to obtain and maintain a current senior reactor operator license.
You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Performing nuclear operations for a reactor system (e.g. TRIGA, calibrations, instrumentation, radiation detection systems) to identify and resolve conflicts for the prevention of potential hazardous situations; 2) Reviewing and testing design changes to nuclear reactor systems; and 3) Performing neutronic and thermohydraulic calculations in support of reactor safety analysis.

Applicants must meet the following basic education requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:

Successful completion of a professional engineering degree. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree (or higher) in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.

OR

Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in the basic requirements under paragraph A (above). The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of an engineering program as described in paragraph A (above)

OR

Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a bachelor's degree in engineering, provided the applicant has had at least one year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. Ordinarily, there should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience, e.g., in interdisciplinary positions.
