Description

If you are an experienced woodworker who has an interest in sharing your skills and knowledge with the community, the Cary Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources division has a very exciting opportunity for you to join our team!

The Arts Education Team at the Cary Arts Center is looking for a Woodworking Instructor to teach adults the unique art of working with wood. Assistance is also needed to help manage an open studio either on an occasional Friday evening or one three-hour weekday per week.

Class and camp dates and times vary throughout the year. Must be available on weekdays, evenings, and/or weekends.

This is a part-time, non-benefited, year-round position, up to 20 hours a week, with a maximum of 999 hours per year.

Typical Tasks

Teach and enforce all safety guidelines, processes, and procedures for the construction lab.
Provide instruction for woodworking, including use of hand and power tools.
Check constructions lab for any safety needs and inform supervisor.
Engage students in active clean-up of tools and space and provide direction for organization after each class.
Manage the open wood studio as needed to enforce safety procedures and help users with tools and projects.
Provide needed supply lists for purchase by requested deadlines.
Perform additional job-related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of all safety procedures and regulations required in a woodworking lab
Knowledge of proper and safe equipment use and maintenance, including cleaning processes
Knowledge of a wide variety of wood and woodworking materials
Knowledge of First Aid (or ability to obtain knowledge with provided training)
General knowledge of design concepts
Ability to use hand and power tools
Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing
Ability to understand carry out verbal and written instructions
Ability to effectively teach the woodworking classes
Ability to acquire knowledge of the Cary Arts Center and PRCR's policies, procedures and services

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

Education and Experience
Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma/GED and at least 2 years of woodworking experience.

Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following:

Some experience teaching (art instruction course, classroom, etc.)
Some experience working with a lathe

Physical Requirements
Work in this class requires the employee to be able to stand for extended periods of time, move about freely and walk unassisted in order to move about the classroom. An employee must be able to lift moderately heavy items (up to 40 lbs.). An employee must be able to hear and talk in order to communicate with the public and with groups under instruction. Visual acuity is needed to effectively supervise the classes and to be able to read typewritten and handwritten materials.

Conditions of Employment:
Requires possession of a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.

Requires ability to work a flexible schedule which includes weekdays, evenings, and/or weekends.
