Class DefinitionGENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIESTo perform professional biological field and/or laboratory work in the area of specialization; to engage in a variety of technical research projects; to prepare and analyze statistical data gathered in research investigations; to present research findings to state and local management bodies; to prepare scientific reports of such biological research findings; to assist in public information inquiries; and to do related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVEDWorks under the general direction of a superior with considerable latitude for the exercise of initiative and professional judgement; work is reviewed upon completion through written and oral reports for conformance to state law and departmental rules, regulations and procedures.

Illustrative Examples of Work PerformedTo perform professional biological field and/or laboratory work in the area of specialization.
To engage in a variety of technical research projects. To prepare and analyze statistical data gathered in research investigations.
To present research findings to state and local management bodies.
To prepare scientific reports of such biological research findings.
To assist in public information inquiries To be responsible for data analysis and presentation of fish, wildlife, and natural resource research projects.
To assist in management programs and research studies to promote sound fish, wildlife, and natural resource conservation.
To assist in conducting field surveys of fisheries or wildlife populations regarding concentrations, population growth rates, mortality, predation, habitat and mobility, and to prepare stock assessments for future utilization.
To prepare, analyze and interpret the findings of such biological research. To develop new research techniques and methods for obtaining data.
To make recommendations for revisions in federal and state laws, rules and regulations and management practices.
To plan and prepare technical reports including but not limited to federal aid reimbursement, scientific publication or general public information. As required, to represent the department at scientific conferences and public meetings, and to assist in a program of public education as it concerns fish and wildlife and natural resource conservation programs.
To give testimony in court as an expert witness for the state. To assist in the evaluation of development proposals for their environmental impact upon existing fish, wildlife and/or natural resources.
To participate in the development and implementation of a variety of cooperative conservation programs with federal, state and local government agencies. As requested, to prepare technical correspondence and requisition specifications for superiors, program operations and management. As directed by a superior, to coach, guide and/or oversee the work of student assistants, volunteers and/or seasonal workers.
To do related work as required.
Required Qualifications for AppointmentKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND CAPACITIESA working knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and techniques of field and laboratory biological research pertaining to fish, wildlife, and/or natural resource conservation and management; a working knowledge of the organization and functions of natural resources and management programs; the ability to develop field studies concerning the investigation, management, and conservation of the resources in one of the specializations indicated; the ability to conduct statistical analysis of the research data compiled and to develop new techniques and methods for obtaining data for use in program management; the ability to prepare and present accurate and concise written and oral reports of research findings, observations and work performed; the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, other government officials and the general public; the ability to engage in continuous active field work requiring physical stamina; and related capacities and abilities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree from a college of recognized standing in the area of specialization as indicated by the job title as follows: 1. Biologist (Freshwater Fisheries): Biology (including substantial coursework focusing on freshwater species), Freshwater Fisheries, Freshwater Ecology, Limnology or a closely related science field. 2. Biologist (Marine Fisheries): Biology (including substantial coursework focusing on marine species), Marine Biology, Marine Fisheries, Marine Ecology, Oceanography, Conservation Biology or a closely related science field. 3. Biologist (Wildlife): Biology (including substantial coursework focusing on wildlife species), Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Ecology, Wildlife Management, or a closely related science field. 4. Biologist (Biometrician): Natural Resource Statistics, Quantitative Biology, Wildlife Biology, Freshwater Biology, Marine Biology, Wildlife Ecology, Freshwater Ecology, Marine Ecology, Oceanography, Marine Science, Conservation Biology or a closely related science field. And,
Experience: Coursework or volunteer work related to monitoring, research and analysis in the designated area of specialization as follows: 1. Biologist (Freshwater Fisheries): Freshwater finfish, shellfish, crustaceans and/or other freshwater species and their habitat. 2. Biologist (Marine Fisheries): Marine finfish, shellfish, crustaceans and/or other marine species and their habitat. Must have experience operating or working aboard small vessels. 3. Biologist (Wildlife): Wildlife populations and their habitats. 4. Biologist (Biometrician): A minimum of one year (52 weeks) of experience conducting statistical and mathematical analysis and/or population models for marine, freshwater or wildlife species and/or their habitat; or work conducting a marine or freshwater species stock assessment; or wildlife population and harvest assessment using mathematical and statistical models.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS1. Must be physically qualified to perform assigned duties as evidenced by a physician's certificate. 2. At the time of appointment and continually thereafter, must possess and maintain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Class Revised: December 22, 1985
