Job DescriptionJob Title: Great Salt Lake Ecosystem Program Biologist IIJob Description:The Utah Department of Natural Resources is looking for a biologist to join the Great Salt Lake Ecosystem Program. Experience a unique opportunity to work with a dedicated team of scientists and biologists on one of the largest saline ecosystems in the world. If you're interested in joining a team of professionals in Hooper, Utah, to conduct surveys and counts, collect field data, record information, and maintain facilities and equipment, the Division of Wildlife Resources has the opportunity you've been waiting for!
The successful applicant will have the opportunity to gain experience working in this unique ecosystem and acquire knowledge of both wildlife and aquatic resources. Opportunities will be available to explore research questions and expand experience in wildlife management. Responsibilities - Conducting fieldwork, sampling, and laboratory procedures for brine shrimp conservation and management
- Conducting limnological sampling and research on and around the Great Salt Lake
- Conducting maintenance on facilities and equipment for sampling equipment, boats, ATVs, and buildings and grounds
- Coordinating aquatic research
- Designing field and laboratory experiments
- Presenting research findings to professional groups and other organizations for educational purposes
Qualifications Required:
• Proficient in using Microsoft Office programs
• Able to develop, direct, and evaluate programs
• Possess strong oral and written communication skills
• Understand the principles, theories, and practices of wildlife management
• Compose and produce reports and written documents
• Operate vehicles and trailers
• Current valid driver's license
Preferred:
• Experience in a limnological discipline
• Experience developing and carrying out research projects
• Experience operating and maintaining boats
• Experience with data entry and statistical analysis
• Experience providing presentations to diverse audiences
• Background in wildlife or aquatic biology with an emphasis on research
• Preference will be given to candidates with a bachelor's degree in a natural resources field. Additional preference will be given to candidates with a master's degree in a wildlife-related natural resources field or another applicable field that is beneficial for the position.
• Preference for demonstrated successful full-time work experience
Supplemental Information Working conditions:
• Risks that require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, such as working around operating machines, with contagious diseases, or hazardous chemicals; working for extended periods in extreme weather conditions; and working in and around bodies of water.
Physical requirements:
• The work requires physical exertion and may include the ability to stand, walk over rough surfaces, bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, and repeatedly lift heavy items (up to 100 lbs) for long periods.
• Operating boats on large bodies of water.
• Engaging in strenuous activity throughout the year.
• Working in extreme heat and cold on the Great Salt Lake or associated wetlands.
• This may require long hours to complete lake sampling and extended hours related to laboratory procedures.
• There may be a need to work on holidays or weekends if required.

The beginning wage for this position will be between $23.96 - $27.91 per hour for new employees. For existing stateemployees' DHRM rules and agency/division policy will determine the starting salary.
