The Environmental Manager is responsible for ensuring the landfill/facility complies with all relevant local, state, and federal environmental regulations, corporate environmental policies, and facility-specific initiatives. This includes maintaining positive community relations by understanding, monitoring, and documenting compliance efforts.
Reports ToSVP of EHS & Sustainability
- Ensure landfill compliance with all relevant local, state, and federal environmental regulations, including those governing waste management, air quality, water quality, and hazardous materials handling.
- Oversee environmental compliance plans, permits, permit renewals, and reports related to air quality, spill prevention, stormwater, and wastewater.
- Perform internal audits and inspections of landfill operations to ensure compliance with environmental laws and company policies. Identify areas for improvement and take corrective actions when necessary.
- Serve as a primary interface with State and Local regulatory authorities for permitting and compliance projects.
- Stay informed on emerging environmental regulations, technologies, and industry trends to ensure the landfill adopts new methods that improve environmental performance and compliance.
- Assist with business development initiatives, including managing permitting processes and conducting due diligence activities.
- Lead the budgeting process for landfill environmental programs and initiatives, ensuring appropriate resources are allocated for compliance and improvement activities.
- Build and sustain strong business relationships with Operations, Health & Safety, Finance and other relevant internal and external stakeholders.
- Develop and implement sustainability initiatives to minimize the environmental impact of landfill operations, such as promoting recycling, energy efficiency, and waste diversion.
- Train landfill staff in environmental regulations, best practices, and company policies. Provide ongoing education to ensure staff remain compliant with environmental standards.
- Promote safety as a core value to cultivate a positive safety culture.
- Bachelor's degree in environmental science, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Management, or related field (master's degree preferred).
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in environmental management within the waste, landfill, or related industries.
- In-depth knowledge of environmental regulations (e.g., RCRA, CERCLA, CAA, Clean Water Act) and waste management practices.
- Certification in environmental management (e.g., Certified Environmental Professional, LEED, or equivalent) is a plus.
- Strong understanding of landfill operations, waste disposal systems, and sustainability initiatives.
- Strong commitment to safety, including following established Health and Safety protocols.
- Proficiency in environmental data management software, MS Office Suite, and GIS tools.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with a diverse range of stakeholders.
- Strong leadership abilities with experience in managing and developing teams.
- Ability to handle complex situations and make decisions in a high-pressure environment.
Physical Demands / Environmental Factors- 50% travel to landfill locations
